What we learned from UFC 99

- First I want to apologize for not being here yesterday and this morning. As I wrote earlier this week, I had some wedding obligations I couldn't get out of. Now that I am back, and partially recovered, here are some items that I think are important.
- Wanderlei Silva still has some gas left in the tank. He may be 1-3 in the UFC, and 1-5 in his past six fights, but the man can still brawl. Does that mean that I think he can beat Anderson Silva, not a chance, but Wanderlei could become a staple at 185lbs. I think the real question is whether the UFC can justify his salary (does he receive a portion of PPV revenue?) and still find meaningful fights that generate interest among the fans. With Wanderlei's performance he has built himself some breathing room.
- Rich Franklin is still very very good. Franklin has only lost four fights, two to Anderson Silva, one to Lyoto Machida and a razor thin decision to Dan Henderson. Very few fighters can claim that 75% of their losses came to two pound-for-pound contenders. It could be stated that Franklin is the most undervalued fighter and former champion in the UFC. Hopefully after this win we will all pay more attention to Franklin.
- Not a big surprise but Cheick Kongo can not wrestle to save his life. Unfortunately for the UFC Cain Velasquez still needs some work. Looks like Shane Carwin may be next in line...
- Marcus Davis and Dan Hardy have a rematch in their near future.
- I think that we just saw Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic in the UFC for the last time. More on this later.
- If there was ever any doubt that Ben Saunders is overrated than Mike Swick erased it. Swick is probably one fight away from a title shot; though with UFC 100 featuring a welterweight championship fight Swick may of just earned his title shot.
