"By its very nature, MMA is a niche sport. It will always be. And while the public's tastes may ebb and flow, I don't see MMA competing on a long-term basis with more traditional sports. Fighters who can captivate the public will emerge, and the sport will rise and fall based on their popularity."

Couldn't disagree more.
I couldn’t disagree more. There was a time when boxing was a major American sport. It did have it’s superstars, but boxing’s popularity spanned generations.
Look at NASCAR’s growth. It’s growth isn’t based on one individual, like golf’s. It is based on the model of the event itself. I think MMA will only increase in popularity because of the exciting nature of the sport, not presence of a few stars.
I am pretty sure NASCAR’s growth has plateaued and there is a great divide between the main stream racers like Jeff Gordon and what the actual NASCAR fans feel (they hate him!).
While the big events get more coverage and it the sport continues to grow its position in popular culture is still considered niche.
I think that is what Gross was trying to get at
