Unfortunately my cable package does not include Showtime or ESPN Deportes (it's a recession, give me a break!) so I was unable to watch Stikeforce's Challenger series last night and won't catch Bellator XII tonight. That being said there is this nifty thing called the Internet where videos of past events can be found. 

Last night Strikeforce put on an excellent night of fights. Apparently Jorge Grugel and Conor Heun stole the show, never thought I would be writing that (if you found video please email me!). The fight is being described as an absolute slug-fest with Grugel pulling off the decision victory. How good was the fight? Some are describing it as a possible "Fight of the Year" candidate, that's how good. 

In the main event "Smokin" Joey Villasenor edge out a narrow victory over Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos. Both fighters were tentative in the first two rounds with little action. Finally in the third round they let their hands fly and Santos was bloodied. Still the early inaction made it a difficult fight to judge and Villasenor walked away with a split decision. 

Tim Kennedy continued to refine his middleweight skills as he beat the solid welterweight Nick Thompson. Thompson moved up in weight to fight Kennedy and his pre-fight comments gave the impression that he was not pleased with the fight. Kennedy used his bigger frame and bulk to bully Thompson until he was finally able to finish him in the second round. Kennedy is a former Green Beret who has had long layoffs due to his military service. He is now training full time. 

Recently Strikeforce made the switch from three to five minute rounds for the female fighters. Sarah Kaufman handled the switch easily, defeating Shayna Baszler via unanimous decision. Many will now look at Kaufman as the next in line to fight for the newly formed female title after Carano and Cyborg.

For those of you who get ESPN Deportes and do not want the fight results of Bellator XII spoiled then read no further.

**SPOILERS** Bellator crowned their lightweight and middleweight champions last night and in both fights the favorite won. In the lightweight title fight there would be no submission magic for Toby Imada as Eddie Alvarez knocked his opponent down in the second round. Alvarez pounced on the downed opponent and as Imada tried to defend the strikes he gave up his back and was submitted via a rear-naked choke. 

In the middleweight title fight Cuban Olympic Judo fighter, Hector Lombard, defeated Jared Hess. Hess put up a good fight but quickly slid behind on the score cards. Entering the fourth round Lombard was up three rounds to none. In the fourth round Hector dropped Hess with a straight right hand and proceeded to pound his opponent in mount position. Hess was cut badly and the referee stopped the bout for a doctor to examine the cut, who proceeded to call the fight. 

Bot Lombard and Alvarez received $100,000 purses for their victories.
