New USA Today/SBN MMA Consensus Rankings

Picture_1_medium

The month of June is about to fade away and there are new USA Today/SBN MMA Consensus Rankings. WKR recaps the big movers and losers in each division

Heavyweight Rankings
Cain Velasquez parlayed his victory over Cheick Kongo into a #11 ranking. Brett Rogers also cracked the top-ten with his victory over Andrei Arlovski. The top of the division is on stand-by until UFC 100 and Affliction "Trilogy"

Light Heavyweight Rankings
The light heavyweight rankings are pretty consistent with last month's. Rich Franklin's victory over Wanderlei Silva has elevated him from #14 to #10. While Wanderlei is now officially out of the top-ten. Quinton Jackson and Rashad Evans have also flipped spots in the #2 and #3 positions respectively.

Middleweight Rankings
Gegard Mousasi fell from #6 to #11 despite beating Mark Hunt in the Dream Super Hulk tournament. Apparently the voters don't like Dream. Mousasi's fall means that a lot of changes occurred in the division. Okami and Marquardt flipped the #2 and #3 positions. Robbie Lawler's loss to Jake Shields sent the #4 middleweight down to #7. Chael Sonnen jumped to #10 and Demian Maia jumped to #5 and Dan Henderson jumped to #4. Despite what Michael Bisping would tell you he's not in the top-ten.

Welterweight Rankings
The Welterweight division stayed fairly consistent. The big mover was Dan Hardy who jumped from #20 to #12 while the man he defeated, Marcus Davis, fell from #16 to #20. The top five stayed the same but Matin Kampmann moved to #6 and Mike Swick parlayed his victory over Ben Saunders into the #7 position. Josh Koscheck fell two spots to #8 and Carlos fell a spot to #9. The largely still unknown quantity of Paulo Thiago takes the ten spot.

Lightweight Rankings
The lightweight division's big shake up was Frankie Edgar's victory over Sean Sherk. Edgar flew up the ranks to #7 with Sherk falling to #8. Since Edgar was easily beaten by Gray Maynard the Ohio wrestler was a big mover as well. Maynard is now the tenth ranked lightweight. The big shocker was Sanchez's stagnant rank as he dropped a spot to #12. Clearly the majority of the compilation was done before the TUF 9 Finale. WKR has Sanchez ranked as the third best UFC lightweight.
