More thoughts on Bobby Lashley and his absence from the UFC

Bobby-lashley2_medium

I just wanted to expand upon an earlier post I made today. Many have rightfully pointed out some of the differences between Brock Lesnar and Bobby Lashley that I glossed over. These criticisms are completely valid thus I need to flush out my perspective a little but more.

I was not trying to make the point that Lashley + 1 year = Lesnar as if it were some kind of mathematical proof. That point of view is an inaccurate representation. Rather I was trying to point out the similarities between the two men and their career arcs when compared to the rest of the UFC's heavyweight division. For instance, Lesnar might be bigger and stronger than Lashley, as Lesnar needs to cut weight to make 265lbs. But Lashley is still a physical monster when compared to the rest of the UFC's heavyweight division. Thus we cannot simply say that Lashley is not enough of a physical specimen to be give a shot in the UFC. Especially since Lashley is a physical freak when compared to the rest of the division (excluding Brock Lesnar).

Also I believe that with Lashley's wrestling background, while not as prestigious as Lesnar's, is still strong enough to translate into the ability to compete at a high level within the division. Here are the top-ten UFC heavyweights according to USA Today / SBN Consensus Rankings (with two more fighters thrown in for good measure).

  1. Frank Mir
  2. Antonio Rodrgio Nogueira
  3. Brock Lesnar
  4. Randy Couture
  5. Shane Carwin
  6. Cain Velasquez
  7. Chieck Kongo
  8. Junior dos Santos
  9. Gabriel Gonzaga
  10. Chris Tuchscherer
  11. Roy Nelson (signed for TUF 10)
  12. Heath Herring (unranked)

Let's ignore Nelson for the moment since he has to go through the the TUF-10 Kimbo-grinder.

The highest ranked fighter on the list that Lashley could beat is Cheick Kongo. After the wrestling clinic Velasquez displayed against Kongo it isn't too far-fetched to claim that Lashley could easily handle the French kick boxer. Perhaps Lashley's athleticism combined with his wrestling skills would allow him to beat Velasquez at his own game. Or even Shane Carwin or Junior dos Santos. Lashley certainly should be able to beat Heath Herring. With the wide gulf of weight and athletic capability between heavyweight fighters it stands to reason that a high energy, big, athletic fighter with a solid wrestling background could translate very quickly. Especially considering that we still don't yet know the quality of the big-three prospects.

The point is that Bobby Lashley should be able to compete at a high level immediately, just like Brock Lesnar did.Lashley's current skill set and superior athleticism to everyone in the heavyweight division, with the exception of Brock Lesnar, and with the state of the UFC heavyweight division that should be reason enough to sign Lashley.

I dunno man

I think Cain is the better wrestler than Bobby. I also am 100% confident that Carwin is much much stronger than Lashley and hits much much harder.
We haven’t really seen Lashley tested against someone who can survive being taken down and hit. Jason Guida certainly made Lashley struggle and Guida has no offensive weapons. If Lashley fought like that against Herring, he could find himself getting KTFO’d.

I know Cain is a better wrestler than Bobby but I would argue that Bobby’s athleticism could push him over the top.

The Guida fight is a legitimate gripe and I get that but the fact we are having these conversations and there are doubts (at least in my mind) is a reason why the UFC should sign him. Hell throw him to the wolves like they Soko and then we will know for sure.

I agree

Lashley hasn’t shown me much…granted his fights have ended relatively quickly against subpar competition…and the Guida fight just showed me he has a long way to go…if that was Lesnar..he would have beat Guida’s face into hamburger meat.

Soko

That’s different because the weight class(LHW) was/is so stacked…they could afford to do that…plus he had beaten some big names beforehand…legit HW’s are hard to come by…so throwing him to the wolves wouldn’t be in their best interest.

Kelvin, we need to do a podcast to debate this out…

Look I dont think Heath Herring, Min Soo Kim exactly make Lesnar’s resume that deep either, which is my point.

The hw division is thin enough that athleticism can take you a long way.

Zak, what exactly are you arguing?

I am not trying to be smart ass. But, do you honestly think this guy is ready for Velasquez and Herrings even though he struggled with a light heavyweight fighting at heavyweight?

Apparently I am wandering around the bizarity of my own mind and nothing is making sense so I apologize for that.

In this post I was trying to add more to the two previous ones I posted. In this one I am trying to develop my point of view in a different manner.

I def think Lashley could handle Kongo and Herring without a doubt (I could totally be wrong which would not be the first time). Herring was out-wrestled by Jake O’Brien and Herring out-wrestled Kongo (as Velasquez did).

Do I think Lashley could beat Cain, probably not, but I think the window is closer than we are all assuming.

The other point I was trying to make was a comparison of Lashley’s athleticism vs. the rest of the HW’s not just comparing him to Lesnar athleticism. Lashley is a 265lbs. HW who is extremely athletic. The fact is that the UFC’s big HW’s are ~240 so Lashley will have a 20pound adv on most of these guys which we have seen can make a big difference.

Of course your right, the Jason Guida fight is a HUGE warning sign and it rightfully gives us pause. But I think that we may be overreacting to that fight. It was Lashley’s second and he was still getting into the grove and was fighting a real fighter (no Kimbo Ray Mercer shit).

If I am still not making sense, which is probably the case (my ADD is a little out there right now), I suggest listening to the Cage Cast episode 11. Spencer calls me an idiot and we talk about this for a while.
