Will the UFC's new magazine start a fight with MMA magazines?
MMA Payout asks the question,
With the UFC entering the market, do the MMA print mags get the Sherdog treatment, with credentialing and photo usage being pulled, now that they are ostensibly competing? Or do they get MMAWeekly'd, with some degree of reasonable access being given? I'd probably lean toward the latter, as the general coverage by the big two is uncritical.
This is an interesting question and will give fans and observers more insight to how the UFC and Zuffa sees its relationship with the media.
With past fights between the UFC and the MMA media there is often a catalyst event where the UFC claims umbrage and revokes press credentials. Usually this entails a great deal of cursing by Dana White and the insitution in question reporting something that makes the UFC look bad. If the magazines don't rock the boat, in the UFC's eyes, it is quite possible that the status quo will remain. However this could call into question the journalistic practices of the magazines. Something that WKR discussed ad nauseum.
Currently it is not a forgone conclusion that the UFC will follow up with monthly issues, as this first issue is really a dry run for a potential monthly magazine. However it should be stated that the UFC has long been looking for ways around traditional media in order to control their image and their brand. This is not a unique phenomenon in today's current media environment.
So tell us what you think. Will a monthly UFC Magazine create a media war between the other MMA magazines or will they peacefully co-exist.
