A Slice of Reality
Everyone seems to be jumping on Kimbo's knob now and blogging about him suddenly going "legit". I'll be the first to say that Kimbo's fighting in the UFC has nothing at all to do with being legit and everything to do with Dana's need to produce more exciting fights. Dana knows that with Silva and Machida now holding titles, interesting and engaging fights in the UFC will be an ever diminishing resource. It also has alot to do with getting ratings up on the TUF show, and anyone who thinks Kimbo is going to be treated the same as the other competitors is a a fuckin' tard.
While this recent development definitely raises questions about Kimbo himself, it only serves to solidify the often echoed fact that Dana White is a double-talking, classless, shitheel cocksucker. For all the bullshit swirling around in the toilet bowl that is the UFC, this is something that is actually interesting. I would be a liar if I said I wasn't going to watch the next season of TUF (and I've never watched an episode before). Let's face it, people want to see Kimbo because he's controversial, he knocks people out, and he has an original look. While he almost pulled off a nice looking Kimura against James Thompson; Kimbo will need to spend a shit-load of time working on his ground game if he hopes to make it into the mainstream with the UFC.
As most can remember, Bas Rutten trained Slice when he first stepped into MMA, only to pull out of the position before Slice lost to Petruzelli.
"I know you've worked closely with Kimbo Slice. When do you think we'll see Kimbo fight again, and will you be in his corner again when he does? I stopped training Kimbo. I had him six weeks before the last fight (a loss to Seth Petruzelli on October 4), I talked to him about certain things that I didn't like, and he promised never to do it again, and then he started doing it again. If people come to me and ask me to train them, I want them to do what I tell them to do, because that's what they came for. ... Once you start doing different things, you're out. It's not because he got knocked out. This was already in progress long before the fight."
What could this have meant? What was the "thing" he was doing that Bas didn't like so much? Drugs? Was Kimbo going to practice railed on goofballs? I can't really think of anything Bas could've been talking about, but you draw your own conclusions.
All I really know about the fuckfest that has been Kimbo's career thus far, is that I don't know much. Lots of shady promoters, knockouts, controversy, money, and shaved tits; but isn't that why we all watch MMA to begin with?

Wow there was a lot in there.
I liked your point about the next season of TUF and how we don’t know if it will be a real competition or follow a Shaw like tactic and be favored for Kimbo’s arrival in the UFC.
Sidenote: does anyone really believe that Kimbo has to win the show to be in the UFC? I know I don’t
I also liked how your brought up Bas’ desertion of Kimbo and how we in the MMA media haven’t done our job in reporting what went down with that instead letting Bas get away with saying ‘oh there were differences’.
I like MMA Eruption’s point that White is really employing a strategy of calculated freak show and we shouldn’t lie to ourselves about it.

Kimbo has to win his first fight to get a contract, Dana is too addicted to the money. Otherwise Kimbo would never be on the sow in the first place.
that is why i think this will be rigged somewhat. Kimbo will get an bum as hist first opponent that way he will have a foot in the door to the UFC

I think you guys are looking for conspiracies where there aren’t any. Dana’s in a no-lose position without the machinations, and he risks too much by trying to pull strings the way the Shaws did (even if he does it with more grace).

Dana pulls strings all the time. He’s got more strings to pull which sometimes leads people off his scent. The difference between Dana and the rest is the level of desperation when pulling the string.
He also tends not to pull them as hard, exerting little nudges of influence over a wider range, rather than blatantly manipulating. The UFC has shown many times that they have a prefered outcome to some events, but that their marketing machine can spin anything into a positive. THere’s no point to complex machinations like this.

Wouldn’t you say that’s a very different situation? Junie is/was a juvenile asshole, but also a legitimate fighter. And even with his freakshow status, he wasn’t gifted the easy road to the finals, wasn’t gifted an easy opponent for his first fight post-TUF finale, and won’t hang around the UFC any longer than his skill would dictate. Junie was just a television ANGLE; focusing on him during TUF was likely more of a choice by the producer of the show than anything else, and he isn’t on some inflated contract just because he was a violent, whiney ratings grabber. His 15 minutes are up unless he can find the skill to actually hang in fights at the UFC level… and Slice will be no different.

Agree....
….with what your saying except the one thing. With Junie, he repeatedly did things that would’ve, and have, gotten others tossed from the house, which created, and rightfully so, the feelings of hypocrisy. Is that the situation with Slice, we don’t know yet. But there is a precedent

Yes, that’s fair. Though I suppose as someone who doesn’t actually watch TUF, I couldn’t care less about what happens on the show because – and really this one and only reason – the fights that happen on the show do not count as professional fights. To me, it’s like an oddball training scenario, and if a training “gym” wants to keep around some arse because they think it helps their business, well, more power to them but I damn sure wouldn’t want to train there…
