Carano and Cyborg to fight for a championship [Update]

Recently Strikeforce announced that Gina Carano and Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos will fight each other on August 15th.

The much anticipated and long awaited bout will also make MMA history. It will be for the first ever female title fight. The fight will also headline Strikeforce's event.

Scott Croker commented on the bout saying,

"That's going to be the No. 1 and the No. 2 females fighting in the world," Coker said of the world's two best women mixed martial artists. "It will be our first Strikeforce female title belt. We're going to be proud to put that on ...

The show at the HP Pavillion will also feature the lightweight rematch between champ Josh Thomson and Gilbert Melendez and Stikeforce's heavyweight champ Alistair Overeem against a yet to be named opponent though many are hoping for Brett Rogers.

There are still some lingering questions about the female championship. What weight class will it be set for? Will they fight three five minute rounds (instead of three minutes) or five three minute rounds? What happens if neither fighter makes weight?

Since that last one has a very good chance of occurring it will be interesting to see how Strikeforce would respond in that situation.

i like this fight and cant wait to see it

heres the problem i see for having this be a championship fight
1. if you dont make weight for a title fight then its (usually) no longer a title fight
2.what weight class is this gonna be for? (im thinking it should be 150lbs just to be safe but might even need to be higher)
3. so after they make this weight class and crown a champion how are they gonna find any challengers? i dont know anyone beside these two that even fight at girls heavyweight?

im all for this fight going down…but first they need to actually show up and make weight, if they dont then it shouldnt be for a title.

I have a bad feeling that if someone doesn’t make weight it will torpedo the fight.

1. “No. 1 and the No. 2 females fighting in the world”: So, which is 1 & which is 2, Scott? Also, I believe at least Megumi Fuji and Tara LaRossa might take offense.

2. Make the contracted weight 200lbs. I’m sure both of them can make that limit. In all seriousness, women’s weight limits should be a little more flexible. I’m think a <120lb & <150lb classes.

3. Since it’s a title fight, my money’s on five 3-minute rounds. Seems fair.

Also, this is looking like a stacked card with three title fights.

In fact, this is seriously worthy of a CBS card as opposed to Showtime.
