Report: Diego Sanchez will be the new #1 contender
Kevin Iole reported in his mailbag what many were predicting for some time now,
"Diego will get the next title shot against the winner of the B.J. Penn-Kenny Florian fight at UFC 101 on Aug. 8 in Philadelphia. While I agree with you that Maynard is deserving, Sanchez is a former "Ultimate Fighter" winner and is 10-2 in the UFC, not counting his wins on TUF 1. While I wouldn't be opposed to having Maynard and Sanchez fight and seeing that winner get the title shot, I believe Sanchez has won enough fights and waited a long enough time to deserve the next chance."
Sanchez just recently dropped to lightweight where he defeated Joe Stevenson at UFC 95 and Clay Guida at The Ultimate Fighter 9 Finale.
Sanchez will fight the winner of B.J. Penn vs. Kenny Florian at UFC 101: Declaration in Philadelphia later this summer.

Sanchez also is probably more of a draw then Maynard right now, especially after Guida fight. Also, a rematch of Florian (if he wins and I hope he can) vs. Sanchez would be an easy sell.

Personally I’d rather see Penn vs. Sanchez then Sanchez vs. Florian.

Let me clarify. I would rather see Penn vs. Sanchez before Florian vs. Sanchez.

I'm sticking with Penn vs. Sanchez at the end of the year.
I just hope BJ STAYS at lightweight. I still think a motivated, 155-pound BJ Penn is borderline unbeatable.
