How to settle the UFC 100 vs. Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg question

One of the most interesting and hotly debated items in the MMA community is which MMA event will garner the most main stream media attention in 2009. Most hardcore fans point to UFC 100 as the bigger story but many in the MMA media are of the belief that Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg will be the bigger story.

With UFC 100 ten days away WKR is urging all MMA fans to take notice of media coverage outside of the MMA online community. Visit ESPN.com, Yahoo Sports, CBS Sports and other major national sports websites. Observe how much screen time UFC 100 gets on the front page and where it is located (it doesn't count if you go to the MMA tab).  Don't stop there, go to your local paper's website as well as major sports blogs such as Deadspin, The Big Lead, and The DL. Hell even visit the front page of SBN and see how much screen time our editors give UFC 100.  Check out news websites such as Slate and The Daily Beast to see if their sports writers mention UFC 100. Watch Sportscenter, PTI, Around the Horn, The Sports Reporters and First Take to get a feeling of how much coverage the World Wide Leader is willing to devote to UFC 100. Listen to NPR's All Things Considered next Friday, when they usually have their sports segment, to see if they even mention UFC 100.

Observe and digest as much information about the UFC's centennial event outside of the MMA blogosphere and try to log away those experiences (WKR will be doing the same thing). If you notice a story on a mainstream website or television program send us an email with the link so we can keep track of what level of coverage UFC 100 gets.

Once August rolls around WKR will do the same thing, and hopes MMA fans will follow suit, before Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg. That way we will be able to tell which event is the real story of 2009.

My opinion

I personally think that people will remember Carano/Cyborg more than they will UFC 100 because it’s the first time that two very good, high profile female mixed martial artists met.

However, the buildup to UFC 100 is bigger than Carano/Cyborg because of the 2 title fights and the culmination of the latest season of TUF.

So if it makes any sense, UFC 100>Carano/Cyborg right now…..Carano/Cyborg>UFC 100 a year from now.

see, I dont see any real build up for UFC 100 outside of the MMA blogs/websites/forums so far. Next week will probably be dif and Zuffa’s PR ppl will be working hard.

BUT

I think more MSM sports writers and commentators will see Carano vs. Cyborg as a better “story” and Carano vs. Cyborg is a better story. It is literally straight out of Million Dollar Baby.
