Shane Carwin vs. Cain Velasquez at UFC 104

Photo

FiveOuncesofPain.com is reporting that Shane Carwin and Cain Velasquez will fight at UFC 104.

Both fighters are part of the UFC's 'big three' heavyweight prospects, Junior dos Santos being the third.

Both fighters are also coming off wins. Cain Velasquez recently defeated Cheick Kongo at UFC 99 in Germany. Shane Carwin defeated Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 96 in March.

Due to the high profile surrounding both of these prospects many will assume that they will be fighting for the position of number one contender in the heavyweight division.

UFC 104 will take place at the Staples Center in Los Angles this October. Currently the main event is rumored to be a light heavyweight title bout between current champion, Lyoto Machida, and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua.

Like I said a couple weeks back, I don’t like this fight.

The match-up just doesn’t make sense, as I’m fairly confident that Carwin will beat the bejesus out of Velasquez standing up and he’s got a damn fine wrestling pedigree of his own should Cain look to take it to the ground.

While it is a great fight for the fans and one many want to see, this eliminates the loser (read: Cain Velasquez, IMO) from the title hunt.

temporarily eliminating a fighter from the title hunt who may need more time to develop is not necessarily a bad idea. Now if he loses and he fights dos Santos next that could be bad

I suppose, but why not let him develop without taking a beating as I think he would against Carwin? I know there aren’t a wealth of opponents currently in the HW division, but some of these guys they are bringing in who fight in the next couple months could be alright.

Winner of Duffee / Russow and Tuchsherer / Gonzaga would all need opponents, as does Heath Herring. Why not set Cain back up with The Texas Crazy Horse?
