WKR Staff Picks for UFC 100
Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar vs. Interim Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir
Zach Krantz: Frank Mir is either a genius or an idiot and I am not sure which one yet. If he truly thinks he is technical freak on his feet then he is an idiot and is going to leave the ring with a terminator hole in his head. However, he might be messing with Brock's head and trying to throw a distraction. My assumption is that even if it goes to the ground Lesnar is a much smarter fight than he was and still wins. I think Mir truly believes what he says and will try and stand with Lesnar. This will lead to a first round TKO for Brock Lesnar.
E. Spencer Kyte: Brock Lesnar via TKO Round 2.
Zak Woods: The ball is entirely in Lesnar's court. If he stick to a solid game plan and doesn't leave himself open he wins this fight. I will point out that Randy kept tagging Lesnar with the over hand right and I think Mir's punching power is greater than Randy's. Then again maybe not. Lesnar via TKO Round 2.
Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre vs. Thiago Alves
E. Spencer Kyte: Georges St. Pierre via TKO Round 4.
Zach Krantz: I do not care if Alves is a dynamic striker who is the toughest GSP has faced. That is all irrelevant when St. Pierre takes the fight to the ground. Alves will not be able to prevent the takedown with strikes or knees and we will see another dominating performance from GSP. St. Pierre via TKO (ground and pound) in late round 2 or mid round 3 will lead to the question of what is next for the Welterweight champ.
Zak Woods: I had never wavered in this pick until today. What is that thing on St. Pierre's elbow? Will he be able to ground-n-pound or throw effective punches. I don't see why not. The underrated skill set in all the talk has been Georges submission skills versus Alves submission defense. Alves was submitted by Spencer Fisher who is not exactly a Jiu-Jitsu wizard. St. Pierre via submission Round 3.
Dan Henderson vs. Michael Bisping
Zak Woods: If Dan Henderson fights like Matt Hamill did against Bisping he will win this fight. That means a solid mix of stand-up with single leg takedowns. Hopefully "Hendo" will land a spinning-back fist like the one he used to take out Wanderlei Silva back in Pride. Unless I have wildly underestimated Bisping's skills (always a possibility) Henderson should win this fight. Dan Henderson via knockout Round 3.
E. Spencer Kyte: Dan Henderson via unanimous decision.
Zach Krantz: The only solace I would have is Bisping won is that I could watch him get smashed by Anderson Silva. He has beaten anyone of value (remember Matt Hamil) and this video sums up how I feel. However, he has said something of value and that is Henderson has knocked out one person in 4 years. If Bisping can keep this fight standing he can pick away at Henderson and do some damage. I am hopeful therefore predicting Henderson plays this smart and will takedown Bisping all day. Henderson via Unanimous Decision
Jon Fitch vs. Paulo Thiago
E. Spencer Kyte: Jon Fitch via TKO Round .
Zach Krantz: This will not be close. Thiago is not a striker and Fitch will dominate him on the ground. Fitch is not the typical wrestler who struggles with submission experts such as Thiago. Fitch will smother him and we will see Fitch via TKO round 1.
Zak Woods: How good is Paulo Thiago? Who really knows? We will find out on Saturday. I have to go with the quantity I know, Fitch via unanimous decision.
Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Alan Belcher
Zach Krantz: Belcher needs and wants to keep this fight on his feet. He is still at a disadvantage, but only by small margin. Akiyama has a much larger advantage on the ground and that is where he will want to take the fight. Belcher has decent defensive grappling, but his takedown defense is not strong to say the least. Expect Akiyama to continuously take down Belcher and finish him with strikes. Akiyama via TKO round 2. Do not be surprised with an upset however.
E. Spencer Kyte: Akiyama via submission Round 1.
Zak Woods: Alan Belcher seems to win fights he is not suppose to win. Is this a trend? I hope not Akiyama via unanimous decision.
Stephan Bonnar vs. Mark Coleman
Zach Krantz: Bonnar via Coleman heart attack Round 2 (If this happens I will never forgive myself).
E. Spencer Kyte: Stephan Bonnar submission Round 2.
Zak Woods: Bonnar will plan on taking this fight the distance to attack Coleman's cardio. Mark should be fighting at heavyweight anyways but with a weight cut and fighting for fifteen minutes will wear down the 44 year old and Bonnar knows it. Bonnar via unanimous decision.
Mac Danzig vs. Jim Miller
Zak Woods: Miller via unanimous decision.
E. Spencer Kyte: Jim Miller submission Round 2.
Zach Krantz: When Danzig won TUF it was not expected that his advantage would be to stay on his feet in a fight. Miller is a strong wrestler with good submissions. Danzig probably has stronger jiu-jitsu than Miller, but not by much. If Danzig can keep this fight on the feet he can walk away with a decision, but this will not happen as Miller takes the fight to the ground and wins via Unanimous Decision.
Jon Jones vs. Jake O'Brien
Zach Krantz: The UFC is throwing their exciting Light Heavyweight prospect against a one-dimensional heavyweight turned light heavyweight. Jones has shown some conditioning issues and is yet to be tested on his back. If O'Brien can lay on top of Jones for a round or two he can pull out a decision victory. Too bad Jones is going to throw Jake across the Octagon and smash his face in. O'Brien good bet, but Jones wins via KO Round 1
E. Spencer Kyte: Jon Jones unanimous decision
Zak Woods: O'Brien will make this a wrestling match early on but then in the second round Jones will finally break the trend and knock Jake out. Jones via TKO Round 2.
Dong Hyun Kim vs. T.J. Grant
E. Spencer Kyte: T.J. Grant via unanimous decision.
Zach Krantz: Dong (hehe, Dong) vs. Grant: Upset of the night. Kim is not a huge favorite, but I can see an upset happening here. Grant has a solid ground game is not lost with his back to the mat. Expect Kim to be able to take Grant down with his excellent Judo throws. From there Grant needs to not only attempt submissions, but more importantly prevent top position strikes from Kim. If Grant can stifle Kim's offense his conditioning will kick in and he can take this fight in the third round. Grant via Submission Round 3 (or Split Decision-future Grant special).
Zak Woods: Kim is too valuable a commodity to risk losing on the undercard. Kim via split decision.
C.B. Dollaway vs. Tom Lawlor
E. Spencer Kyte: C.B. Dolloway via submission Round 1 (probably something ridiculous too!).
Zak Woods: Not a big fan of Dollaway. Lawlor via please win god!
Shannon Gugerty vs. Matt Grice
Zach Krantz: Both fighters can stand and throw down. However, if Grice is unable to finish Shannon on the feet he will revert to his comfort zone which is wrestling. Going for the takedown will be a mistake as Shannon catches Matt in something basic. Gugerty via Submission Round 2.
E. Spencer Kyte: Shannon Gugerty vis TKO Round 2.
Zak Woods: Gugerty via unanimous decision.

I’ve been talking about these fights for so long that anything more than a prediction would have been too much effort.
Main card breakdowns are available at Keyboard Kimura, as well as here at WKR from the three of us over the last couple days.
As bad as this sounds, I almost can’t wait for tomorrow to be over… who wants to talk Affliction: Trilogy? UFC 101? 102?
Shamelessly self-promoting since 1997...

I understand sort of...
I feel burned out too. But I just can’t wait for Bisping to eat it

12 hours from now, this will all be over…
Except for the discussions of what took place and what happens next and who the winners and losers are and so on.
