UFC number one contender bouts
Despite Georges St. Pierre's injury the UFC is already announcing a number one contender bout for the welterweight division.
Many observers believed the winner of the Martin Kampmann Mike Swick fight at UFC 103 would be rewarded with a title shot. According to MMA Junkie Joe Silva informed Joe Rogan of this possibility.
However when that title shot would occur is up for debate. Current champion, Georges St. Pierre, suffered an injury at UFC 100 and will be medically suspended until January unless cleared by an orthopedic doctor. There is also the possibility of a surgery. With St. Pierre likely side lined until late '09 or early '10 a welterweight title match may be a year off.
Dana White also talked about another potential number one contender bout on the the Opie and Anthony show. White stated,
"We've got Shane Carwin and Cain Velasquez fighting and probably the winner of that fight will fight Brock Lesnar."
Not quite a guarantee but once again most observers thought the winner of this bout would fight Lesnar for the heavyweight title.
There is still the possibility that the winner of Randy Couture Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 102 could be an opponent for Lesnar if Carwin and Velasquez fail to deliver a good bout (e.g. Arlovski-Werdum). However it looks like Randy may be positioning himself to fight Lyoto Machida with a victory.
