Josh Thomson may withdraw from Strikeforce title fight
Some events are simply cursed.
UFC 85 was one such event as every fighter on the card went down with an injury. But the UFC soldiered on and the event gave us the Alves upset over Matt Hughes. It is a sign of a good, and deep, promotion that they are able to persevere through adversity.
The latest news surrounding Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg is that Strikeforce lightweight champion, Josh Thomson, may have to withdraw from his title defense against Gilbert Melendez as his leg injury is not fully healed. Thomson spoke to MMA Junkie Radio regarding his status,
"I broke it right at the ankle, so I had to have some plates put in with some screws," Thomson said. "It was a double break in the fibia. I had a break in the lower part of the bone and a break in the upper part of the bone. I got eight screws and a plate put in.
"It was kind of a nasty break. The good thing is it wasn't a jagged break. There was no compound fracture."
Now nearly four months later, Thomson admitted he's not yet 100 percent."I guess you could say that two weeks ago I was on crutches," Thomson said.
Thomson hasn't officially withdrawn yet but if Thomson were to withdraw that would make it the third title fight to go down on Strikeforce's August fightcard.
Already the heavyweight title match and welterweight title matches have been scrapped.
Strikeforce did announce yesterday that they were adding a light heavyweight title bout between Renato Sobral and Gegard Mousasi. These two fighters were suppose to fight at the now defunct Affliction "Trilogy" card.
This unfortunate situation will reveal the viability of Strikeforce.
