UFC Videogame Franchise headed to the Wii
THQ is expanding the platform reach of their successful UFC license,
CEO Brian Farrell announced during the company's first quarter financial call that the UFC series will appear on the Nintendo Wii and handheld consoles, and possibly by next year.
"We plan to build our UFC franchise by expanding international sales and by developing games on new platforms such as handhelds and the Nintendo Wii."
THQ is clearly milking the UFC cash cow and Fighter's Only gives us some recent numbers regarding the IP,
The company has unexpectedly posted a profit for the fiscal quarter ending June 31st, which is almost entirely due to sales of UFC Undisputed.
THQ made a net profit of $6.4 million in the three months leading up to June 31st, compared to a loss of $27.2 million for the comparable period a year ago.
That profit was taken from overall revenues which totalled $243.5 million, an increase of 77 per cent on the same quarter last year.
THQ chief executive Brian Farrell said the results are "a vast improvement from a year ago and evidence of a dramatic turn around here at THQ."
It should be noted that THQ took drastic measures to stave off bankruptcy including trying to save $220 million and cutting 600 employees. The severe cuts by THQ coupled with the success of UFC 2009 Undisputed is probably the reason for the unexpected profit.

Correction: WKR's original headline stated that UFC 2009 Undisputed was headed to the Wii. In fact it is simply the UFC franchise that will be headed to the Wii. WKR apologizes for our mistake.
