MMA will bring undesirable gangsters to your city
Hey MMA fans! Guess what? Instead of being blood thirsty Romans at the Coliseum you are now Mobsters!
Oh, how I wish I were kidding.
Check out this propaganda article from EdmontonSun.com,
VANCOUVER -- The potential for an Ultimate Fighting Championship event to draw undesirable gangsters to downtown Vancouver is real, say police.
"It's a fact," said Sgt. Bill Whalen, spokesman for the combined forces special enforcement unit. "We've seen that UFC events attract some ... gang or organized crime members. It's popular with them."
Extreme fighting is equally popular with law-abiding citizens, Whalen added.
The difference, said Irwin Cohen, a criminologist at the University of the Fraser Valley, is the demographics for mixed martial arts fans overlaps considerably with young men involved in organized crime.
"You could make the argument ... in terms of a broader audience it may appeal to that classic 14- to 22-year-old male, aggressive, and some of that does fit into the organized crime or gang profile as well."
No numbers, no statistics, no proof just complete and total bull shit.
On the positive side, at least they aren't talking about "human cockfighting" or "human dogfighting" or any other form of barbaric animal death sport but seriously, is this the 1920's?
Using this logic, and I use the word logic begrudgingly, then you wouldn't want baseball in your city because John Dillinger liked it.
Really what the police just said is the equivalent of this, "Hip hop is associated with gang culture so we don't want a Fifty-Cent concert in our city because it will bring the Bloods and Crips into the city."
I feel like I am dealing with the birthers.

By Birthers, do you mean the Obama ones or the Trigg Palin ones? Lunacy comes in all flavors.

Come on, you weren’t being ambiguous. But it’s okay, I can separate MMA from politics.
It’s not gangsters that the Canadian cops are actually worried about. It’s wolves getting the scent of blood from the octagon then invading the villages and clawing their way into the igloos. They just don’t want to say that and scare the populace.

Wait… you mean that’s not true?
I'm the kind of girl who loves to watch a GOOD fight!

The irony is that the Sun newspapers (in every major Canadian city) are the ones with the bikini models called “Sunshine Girls” in every issue, making them most likely the most popular newspaper with Canadian MMA fans.
its a legit fear. The Vancouver MMA scene is rife with organized crime involvement.

I am an MMA fan and was born and raised in Vancouver and i think there is an impression out there that Vancouver is this lily white innocent city but do some digging and youll find out it just isnt the case.
Currently, underground MMA events go on around here and in the suburbs usually on Native Indian land and reserves. Promoters try and put on safe events but with no heavy arm of government around to make sure rules are followed Ive heard events have degenerated into fight clubs with refs being unable to stop one guy from continuing to beat on another or from letting go of submissions while gang brothers line the front rows of the cage/ring
its a catch 22 … the city needs to approve/sanction MMA and bring a UFC event to the city because then it can be regulated and its image cleaned up … BUT … I personally am wary of attending the first UFC event because of what might go on in the stands and outside the arena.
2009 is a year of fear in this city. I have a theory on why the UFC PPV buy rates are largest around here then any other place in North America. Alot of UFC fans here would rather stay safe at home and watch the event with friends than go out to the bars/pubs that are showing the PPV because theyre filled with gang members
just telling it like i see it from here
