Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin set for UFC 106

Its official!

UFC 106 just got its main event and it will be a heavyweight title bout between Brock Lesnar (4-1) and Shane Carwin (11-0).

The news was first reported by MMA Madness

Brock Lesnar recently defeated Frank Mir in a title unification bout at UFC 100. Shane Carwin last fought at UFC 96 where he defeated former heavyweight contender, Gabriel Gonzaga.

Carwin was originally scheduled to fight at UFC 104 against Cain Velasquez in a number one contender bout. That fight has been scrapped though it remains to be seen if Velasquez will get a new opponent for the Los Angeles card. Fighter's Only is reporting that  Velasquez will fight the winner of Lesnar vs. Carwin, which would seem to indicate he is off the 104 card. Though MMA Fanhouse is reporting that Cain is still on the 104 card.

The sudden re-shuffling of the UFC's fall schedule is interesting on several levels. Both the lightweight and middleweight titles could have been headliners for UFC 106. Perhaps these title fights are being pushed back to UFC 108 in January, which will take on the traditional end of the year mega fight.

Since the UFC accelerated Brock Lesnar's fight schedule it also raises questions of whether his contract requires him to fight twice a year as he has only fought once in 2009. This could also indicate that the UFC had penciled Fedor into the 106 main event and planned on Velasquez or Carwin fight the winner of that ill-fated fight.

Shane Carwin posted on his blog that he, and Lesnar, have verbally agreed to fight at UFC 106.

This is good test for Brock, we know Carwin can deliver a one punch KO and take a punch as well, but we have not seen Brock face anyone with one punch KO power. We’ll see if he is as good as people like to say. With that being said, I want Carwin to knock is ass out.

Velasquez

I think that Cain Velasquez will stay on the UFC 104 fight card and face Gilbert Yvel. A win by Velasquez puts him right at the top with several fight options for the UFC to choose.

I still like Lesnar in this one. He’s still going to be slightly larger but the key will be his speed. I believe, he’ll be able to move in and out on the feet better to avoid Carwin’s punches. Plus, Lesnar is more versatile, using kicks and knees as well as the Thai plumb whereas I don’t recall seeing Carwin do anything but box. Granted, he hasn’t needed to.

Lesnar’s best strategy would be to force Carwin into the later rounds and test his conditioning. Brock’s cardio is a proven commodity where Carwin’s is an unknown.

The biggest question mark for both men is how they’ll fare on their backs because chances are, both are going to wind up there at some point. Lesnar was taken down by Couture but used his size advantage (one he won’t have here) to get back up quickly. In fact, if one guy comes in with a vastly superior guard, that could be a game changer. I’m not expecting Carwin to whip out a gogoplata or Lesnar to suddenly throw up a “Fedor Armbar” from the bottom, but good ground defense and hip control for sweeps could become a significant advantage. I know Lesnar has been training with Rodrigo Medeiros for quite some time, whereas Carwin’s jui jitsu training is a complete mystery since Greg Jackson does not, to my knowledge, have a dedicated BJJ coach. Plus, Jackson’s guys aren’t known for their guards.

It’s a very interesting fight, but one that still favors the champion.
