Hazelett vs. Parisyan set for UFC 106
According to MMAWeekly.com an undercard bout between Karo Parisyan and Dustin Hazelett is set for UFC 106 on November 21 in Las Vegas.
A welterweight bout pitting returning fighters Karo Parisyan and Dustin Hazelett against each other has been verbally agreed to for UFC 106 on Nov. 21 in Las Vegas. Sources close to the bout confirmed the agreement to MMAWeekly.com on Monday.
The two will be part of the undercard in support of a recently revealed title fight between UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar and challenger Shane Carwin. Tito Ortiz will make his UFC return on the same card, facing former UFC champion Mark Coleman in a light heavyweight bout at Mandalay Bay.
A non signed undercard announcement would generally require nothing more than a fanpost (or mentioned in "UFC News and Notes"), but Parisyan is a former top contender who has fallen in status due to injuries, positive drug tests, and rumored anxiety. I am also a fan boy and openly bias when it comes to Hazelett. Dustin was ready for a big fight with then promising Ben Saunders until he tore his ACL. Hazelett had back to back submission of the night honors, including a flying armbar submission of the year according to Sherdog. It was not the submissions that won me over, but his response to them. He refused to teach the maneuver in his gym because he stressed that he got lucky with the position and used his fundamentals and understanding of jiu-jitsu to sink in the armbar.
It appears this fight places Hazelett with little to lose (except for the fight obviously) and Karo has a lot to lose. Karo is coming of a disappointing win that was changed to a no contest. He appears to be a shell of his former self and is coming off a drug suspension. A loss here could further hurt his reputation in the UFC even with an 8-3-1 record within the promotion. However, Karo's reputation is still high enough that a win over him matters and loss to him is understandable, especially when Hazelett is coming off a yearlong lay-off due to injury. A win for Dustin does much more than a win for Karo and loss for Karo hurts much more than a loss for Dustin.
Being that I am bias and want him to win I am a little nervous about this fight. Tearing your ACL is one of the most severe injuries in sports and can have major lingering affects if the ligament is not at full strength. Facing Karo Parisyan in his first fight off injury is very tough and I was somewhat hoping for a trial run on the ACL first. However, as a fan of MMA I am very excited about this fight and it is appearing that UFC 106 will be an amazing card. It has fights for the educated (Parisyan/Hazelett and Fitch/Almeida), fights for the casual fan (Ortiz/Coleman), and the big fight for both (Lesnar/Carwin).
