What we learned from UFC 101
- B.J. Penn proved that 155lbs. is the perfect weight for him. This also proves that when Penn is in shape he is really, really good.
- Diego Sanchez will most likely fight B.J. Penn next.
- There's one punch knockout power and then there is Anderson Silva power. Silva's power has its own scientific classification right next to fusion power.
- Prediction: We won't see Anderson Silva fight a top light heavyweight unless he is making a permanent move to the division. Silva made Griffin look like he was in little league, such dominance will give pause to any top light heavyweight who is offered a fight with the middleweight champion. Unless the UFC sweetens the deal with lots of upfront money it seems unlikely that we will see Silva fight a top-five opponent at 205 again.
- Nothing to be ashamed of if you are Forrest Griffin, but it was still amazing to see him handled so effortlessly.
- Georges St. Pierre's decision after UFC 100 to play down a potential fight with Anderson Silva seems much more wise right now.
- Silva will most likely fight Dan Henderson next, though the UFC 102 promo billed Maia vs. Marquardt as a fight for a possible title shot.
- UFC 101 attendance was 17,411 with a $3.55 million gate. The sum of the gate set a new record for Pennsylvania combat sports.
- The UFC likes to mention that they are a promotion of stars, well they are fast becoming the promotion of stagnant stars. At this moment it appears that every division in the UFC has a dominant champion with few contenders. Will fans tune in if they don't buy the next crop of challengers?
- Tito Ortiz will fight Mark Coleman next
- The UFC wants to go to Fenway, it will be just like the winter classic!
- Amir Sadollah and Kendall Grove both lost. That's two more TUF champions that are dangerously close to being thrown on the trash heap. Perhaps the show has run its course?
- Thales Leites was a big disappointment. What was a bigger disappointment was that the UFC, Joe Silva and Dana White tried to pawn him off as a legitimate number one contender. Hopefully they will learn from this experience and we will never have to see a manufactured title fight again.
- Maybe the UFC should let Silva fight Roy Jones Jr....
