Shocking! Brian Bowles KO's Miguel Torres

I don't believe what I just saw!

There is a new WEC bantamweight champion and his name is Brian Bowles.

WEC 42 featured a bantamweight title fight between Champion Miguel Torres and challenger Brian Bowles as its main event and many thought this would be another showcase bout for Torres. Brian Bowles had different plans.

In the waning moments of the first round Miguel connected with a a straight right that put Bowles on the defensive. The champ seized the moment and attacked unleashing a barrage of punches towards the retreating Bowles. But once backed against the cage Brian threw his own right hand that dropped Torres to the ground. From their Bowles unleashed his own ground-n-pound cleaning knocking Torres out.

If UFC 101 was a practice in predictability WEC 42 was anything but as one of the biggest upsets of the year occurred in MMA. Torres was a -300 favorite going into tonight's fight.

Many considered Miguel Torres a top pound-for -pound fighter as he boasted a 37-1 record prior to this fight. Torres had not lost since 2003 though the relatively unknown Takeya Mizugaki fought Torres to the distance. Ironically Bowles was suppose to fight Torres instead of Takeya but Brian withdrew due to an injury.

Brian Bowles remain undefeated as he pushed his record to 8-0.

WEC was awesome tonight, the Benavidez vs Cruz was non stop action and intensity and Torres getting knocked out was a complete surprise, not necessarily that he lost, but in the fashion that he did. With Dana’s recent talk of absorbing the WEC into the UFC now seems like as good a time as any. The 135 and 145 lb fights would be a welcome addition, and a great replacement for fights like Neer vs Pellegrino.

I’m as surprised as anyone… except that I said this fight smelled a lot like Faber – Brown I about ten days ago and now I know why.

As for a merger, this whole card was full of action and I think the top end of the WEC Lightweight division would be fine at 155 in the UFC. Guys like Cerrone, Varner, Henderson, Roller would do just fine and having the dynamos at 135 and 145 in the mix makes for even more entertaining options.

Shamelessly self-promoting since 1997...
