Cung Le gives up belt, Miller vs. Shields for new champion
Finally there is some closure between Strikeforce and Cung Le (WKR is assuming that Strikeforce burnt those letters and pictures finally). Le will relinquish his title allowing Jake Shields and Jason "Mayhem" Miller to fight for the middleweight title on November 7th for the CBS Fedor vs. Rogers card.
Strikeforce CEO, Scott Coker, explained the situation to MMA Weekly,
"I had a conversation with Cung and he has a lot of respect for Jake and Jason, and he's got another movie coming up, so he's asked me if he could step down, which we're going to honor his request," said Coker. "By no means does that mean he's going to be retired, but he's going to be unavailable for the next two months."
Miller (22-6) vs. Shields (23-4-1) was rumored for some time though mostly on Twitter by "Mayhem" himself. It did appear that the fight negotiations were stonewalled then Jake Shields called out Miller for being a paper tiger.
Now does this mean that Strikeforce and Le have officially moved on?
"With Cung, every six weeks we'll be checking back with him," he continued. "Now that he's not going to be our title holder, we'll put him in some big super fights and continue his MMA career, but not have the pressure of defending his belt when he has movie opportunities."
Maybe Strikeforce didn't burn those letters after all...
