Matt Hughes responds to Koscheck's call-out

Earlier I came across an article at Bloody Elbow concerning Matt Hughes' response to Josh Koscheck calling him out over an impressive, yet almost certain victory in the eyes of the MMA community over Frank Trigg.

"I find Koscheck calling me out kind of interesting and I actually don’t know why he is doing that. I was used to kids doing this when I was the champ, but as you know I don’t have the belt now and I’m puzzled as to why Koscheck wants to fight me and not the champion in the weight class. I have no interest in fighting Koscheck and, as he was showing everybody, he’s just a kid. As of yet, the UFC has never come to me and asked me to fight him."

Star-divide

Yes, Koscheck lost to the champion Georges St. Pierre just over two years ago, and a challenge to Matt Hughes rather than asking for a title shot against a previous loss may be the better choice. Not to mention Matt referring to a man four years younger as a kid being a bit silly; but is this a sign of the immaturity of Koscheck? Matt Hughes is at least somewhat close to retirement, and has little to prove at this point. The welterweight division poses more apt challenges for a still-developing fighter like Josh than a man who had his first professional MMA bout in 1998.  Growing up a little over an hour away from Hughes' hometown, I may be a tad partial on his behalf... But Koscheck constantly convinces me his attitude will never match his potential. So i ask you for your opinion. Would you be interested in seeing this fight, and how do you feel about Josh Koscheck's challenge?

This just in, Hughes plays mind games

Seriously, Hughes will fight anyone. He has no problem fighting Kos, this is just his way of starting some shit to pre hype the fight.

Dude, if you’re going to criticize Koscheck, criticize Swick too, cause this is double standard. Maybe a little prejudice.

I may have mentioned Swick if this had anything to do with him. I see Kos and Swick almost even in current talent, and think Kos could improve more than him if his attitude allowed for it. I don’t think Swick can progress much more as a fighter really. And Swick didn’t call out a guy with one foot out the metaphorical door of retirement. So that’s why I’m quicker to jump the gun on criticizing Josh. Sorry to offend you, this is all only my mediocre opinion. You never said whether you’d be interested in the Kos-Hughes fight. Seems Dennis Hallman is the talked-about next contender for Hughes now anyways.

Despite his top-10 ranking, Matt Hughes is irrelevant in the current UFC WW picture. He has been destroyed by Alves and GSP and his last two wins were hardly dominant LnP victories over Lytle and Serra.

I completely agree. Being a fan of him, I personally wish he would retire now that his last fight is a victory. He was dominant during his championship reign, but the sport has evolved too much for him to continue with his skill set. If you can’t strike, you can’t win. Usually.
