Golden Boy doesn't believe the UFC's numbers
Flush with success due to the news that the Floyd Mayweather Jaun Marquez fight did over a million pay-per view buys, Golden Boy Promotions is taking aim at the UFC's books.
Specifically their pay-per view numbers for UFC 103.
[Richard] Schaefer questioned the legitimacy of UFC pay-per-view results that were leaked. He said HBO is a publicly traded company that would face serious repercussions for releasing false numbers. The UFC, he noted, is a private company with no such concerns.
"I think the UFC and boxing should be able to co-exist and work together in this thing that we call (combat) sports," Schaefer said.
"I don't want to talk (expletive) about the UFC. But Dana White can't do an interview without knocking boxing. If he thinks we're idiots and don't know anything about the pay-per-view business, I'll make him a challenge.
"I am willing to hire one of the top three accounting firms, at my expense, and do an audit of his pay-per-view results. They are nowhere near what is put into the public. There is talk that UFC 100 did 1.6 million, but it barely broke a million. I am willing to pay to have the audits done to prove this."
Early reports indicated that UFC 103 did between 400,000-600,000 buys.
Schaefer is clearly a biased source but he, and other UFC rivals, keep harping on the UFC's secrecy. As long as Zuffa is a private company --after what happened to Station Casinos when they went public it will probably remain so-- we will never really know how accurate the pay-per view numbers are.

It is a legitimate claim and probably true to an extent. I obviously have no proof and am not making the claim they are lying, but I would not be surprised if this was case. Most private companies inflate their gains to the public as it makes them look stronger and it is not as if the UFC is the most honest, open, company in the world.
Almost everyone floats their numbers (to the public, not government) so why would they be different.

i am not claiming that the numbers are just now being distorted or that they are criminally off. Perception is key and it is not surprising for private companies to skew public perception. For example, when you go to a baseball game and they announce attendance that number is an exaggeration. It is not people in the stadium or the tickets sold. It is tickets out of system (comps, media, player seats, etc…) and that number is even bumped most times. Similar type of example. Nothing criminal, but it an independent auditor looked at the reports they would most likely not be the exact same and it is normal and i have no problem with it.
Sorry about the length, but i tend to ramble

we are relying on his sources (which I and many ppl trust) but the fact there is no legal obligation to release numbers aka a public company vs. private company is something detractors can harp on
