Fantasy #1 Contender Tournament Round 1: #4 Mike Swick vs. #13 Dong Hyun Kim

Photo

The UFC Welterweight Division has a plethora of young talent, a dominating champion, and many exciting match ups to choose from, but the one thing they lack is a true number one contender.  I doubt the UFC would ever put together a welterweight tournament to determine a true number one contender (oh do I hope to be wrong), but we at WKR can have our own virtual (we're dorks, deal with it) tournament.  The bracket and rankings have been set and it is time to begin the tournament.  Let your vote choose who wins the most prestigious, meaningless, fake, yet enjoyable UFC Welterweight number 1 contender tournament.

The next match up is between #4 Mike Swick and #13 Dong Hyun Kim.  Fighter details after the jump.

UPDATE: The last day to vote for any first round match ups will be Sunday October 4.  The Second Round will start on Tuesday the 5th.

Star-divide

Mike Swick 14-2 (9-1 UFC, 4-0 Welterweight): The man currently in the real number one contender bout is an exciting fighter who earned his nickname by finishing 3 of UFC wins under 1 minutes.  He is a very good kickboxer with a constantly improving ground game.  He is also one of three AKA welterweights at the top of the division.  He may not be the best fighter to contend against the champ, but it looks as though it is his turn.  The UFC just put him against Dan Hardy for a supposed number one contender bout.  Will we see a Martin Kampmann repeat or will Swick become the third AKA fighter to lose to GSP.

Dong Hyun Kim 12-0-1 (1) (3-0 (1) UFC): Kim was supposed to fight Dan Hardy at 105, but got hurt and is being replaced by Swick.  Kim is Judoka who has proven a technical striker as well inside the Octagon.  The Stun Gun is only 27 and most likely going to improve over the years, but I think getting hurt was the best thing for him.  Hardy is no GSP, but he would be a lot for Kim to handle.  Kim's wins inside the UFC are against T.J. Grant, Jason Tan, and Matt Brown (split decision).  His no contest is an overturned loss to Karo Parisyan (painkillers).  Do you think Kim could pull off the upset against Swick or will favorite win?

#3 Josh Koscheck vs. #14 Anthony Johnson

#7 Paulo Thiago vs. #10 Carlos Condit

#1 Thiago Alves vs. #16 Brock Larson

#8 Matt Hughes vs. #9 Paul Daley

Agreed, but Kim hasn’t impressed me either. He looked good against grant, but grant is not top level competition and I have been unimpressed otherwise.
