Figuring out who gets the title shot at 170lbs.
It's that time of the month when WKR gets to throw on the Joe Silva and pretend we are UFC matchmaker.
The issue in question is who will be next in line to fight Georges St. Pierre. It was suppose to be the winner of Mike Swick vs. Martin Kampmann but now that has blown up we are back to square one.
First we need to know whether St. Pierre is ready to fight in early 2010 and whether the UFC wants to use him in early 2010. For the sake of this article let's say that is the tentative plan is for St. Pierre to fight in the first three months of 2010.
Carlos Condit, Brock Larson Martin Kampmann, Josh Koscheck and Frank Trigg are all top welterweights who are also fighting in September.
Kampmann was suppose to be fighting for a title shot against Mike Swick. Will Martin still earn a title shot if he beats the last minute replacement Paul Daley? Seems unlikely as Daley will be making his UFC debut.
Trigg and Koscheck are the only pair battling one another so if the UFC needs a title contender immediately then a Koscheck win could result in a title shot. But this scenario is not the most appealing and what happens if Josh or Martin loses?
What appears far more likely is that the two welterweight fighters who have the most impressive wins will fight for the number one contender position in early 2010.
WKR's guess is Koscheck vs. Kampmann at UFC 108.
Now there is always the chance of upsets and if either fighter goes down then who knows what will happen.
There is also a temporal quality. If Kampmann wins but it is ugly where as Josh Koshceck and Carlos Condit both win via highlight reel finish we could see those two fight for the number one contender position.
Ultimately September is going to be a break or make month for five top welterweight fighters.
