M.I.A: Mirko Cro Cop's Left High Kick KO

   Picture_1_medium

This new feature -- which I've wanted to do for quite some time -- will look at fighters who have not recently utilized the techniques and/or strategies which they became best known for.

This inaugural edition focuses on Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic.

By the time UFC 103 rolls around, it will have been over three years since Cro Cop last knocked out an opponent with what has been his signature move, the Left High Kick.

Cro Cop built his reputation as a devastating striker on the the heels of dominating performances in K-1 and Pride.  His brutal knockouts of Igor Vovchanchyn, Aleksander Emilianenko and Wanderlei Silva -- all via LHK -- will go down as some of the absolute best in MMA history.

It was those types of knockouts that Zuffa brass were expecting to see when they signed Cro Cop to the UFC in a huge money deal at the end of 2006.  Coming on the heels of his Pride Open-weight Grand Prix Championship performance, Cro Cop's first UFC opponent, Eddie Sanchez was brought in as the sacrificial lamb whose role was to serve as fodder for Cro Cop's future UFC highlight reel.  Cro Cop won the match handily, and at one point did land a glancing LHK, but due to the fact that his opponent spent most of the fight backpedaling and circling away, he was not able to finish impressively.

Almost three years and four UFC bouts later, the only impressive high kick we have seen involving Cro Cop was the one he was on the receiving end of. See: Gonzaga, Gabriel.

Star-divide

In order for Cro Cop to make another run at the top of the Heavyweight division he has to finish a worthy opponent and if he can do it with a vintage LHK we could see him jump to the front of the line for a title shot.

So what must Cro Cop do to land that vaunted high kick and add a true highlight to his UFC reel?  At this point Cro Cop seems to be comfortable fighting in the cage as opposed to the ring that in the past he's said he prefers.  Opponents, more than ever, are wary of the high kick and circle away from it, making it difficult for Cro Cop to land.  In recent years he has also lacked the intimidation factor that used to give him an edge before the opening bell had even rung.

In the Al-Turk fight we saw an aggressive Cro-Cop continually coming forward and that's been the style that has served him well in the past.  But as Gonzaga, Cheick Kongo and Alistair Overeem have demonstrated, coming right at Cro Cop and bullying him seems to be the best way to neutralize his once-feared striking game.  Going forward, Cro Cop will need to maintain distance in order to effectively throw those deadly kicks, as well as get back to being the aggressive stalker he was in Pride.

Cro Cop once famously said, "Right kick, hospital.  Left kick, cemetery."  Now the question is when -- and if -- we will see him land another spectacular LHK knockout.

Could it be in less than two weeks against Junior Dos Santos?

I miss the old Cro Cop.

he never liked being bullied around and the HW’s are just too big now.

I’ll never forget UFC 67.

I set up this huge UFC party and had a bunch of people over who had never seen MMA before. I’d been telling everyone for weeks about Rampage and Cro Cop and how they were two of the most incredible fighters to ever come to the UFC.

Once the PPV started I was concerned that the card would turn out to be a major bust as the first bout shown was the awful Scott Smith/Patrick Cote fight that had just about everyone in the room ready to give up on MMA altogether.

After just one fight there was a general feeling of apathy amongst those who were UFC virgins, they stood up from their seats and started moving about and congregating in other parts of the house. They had already thrown in the towel.

I remember telling everyone, “Don’t worry, Rampage and Cro Cop will deliver!”

After a sluggish opening round that turned off the rest of those who were willing to give the fights a second chance, Rampage scored a pretty sweet KO (though he didn’t slam Eastman, as I had been telling everyone he would) and Cro Cop’s fight didn’t end with the LHK I had been telling everyone was coming “any second now….”

Sadly, by the time the main event came on there were only a few people left paying attention….

Bullying works.. yes and no.

I have been re-watching a lot of Pride recently and it seems like the thing that really took Cro Cop out of his game was disturbing his timing. He is really predictable in his stricking and is basically a power striker, he just takes big shots. The reason he was successful with his high kick is speed, he was just so fast with his high kick and disguised it pretty well and could have been a low kick. That said he beat aggressive fighters before as long as they didn’t disturb his timing, he needs to set up his shots way in advance and then just crush you with it (Mark Hunt beat him by just being first to strike, not necessarily being more aggressive than him.) Dos Santos is probably too explosive in his striking for Mirko to handle unless Dos Santos walks into a punch or a kick. That said, this is a pretty good matchup for both guys and could be an exciting fight, hopefully we will see Cro Cop of old..

Rampage doesn’t slam anymore… no idea why. Perhaps the opposition he faces now cut as much weight as he does and he can’t manhandle them anymore. That Arona slam was crazy.

Its funny that people talk about Rampages slams even though he himself admits his wrestling, not his wrestling base, is a weak point in his game. His slams that shine in peoples memories the most were against ground fighters. I wont ever forget UFC 67 because I wont forget how everyone around me was waiting for a big slam and I knew there was no way that was going to be set up seeing as he was fighting Marvin Eastman.

As for CroCop, I dont see why people hold onto his head kick KO’s and say they miss the old CroCop. Hes had plenty more KO’s and TKO’s than LHK KO’s. Not to mention he’s had some insane body kick wins and very recently won with a leg kick over Hong Man Choi. He smashed Barnett after head kicking Silva, TKOed a Kalib Starnes-eqsue Eddie Sanchez, and has been back to using those devastating hands to win him two TKO victories after his shortcoming in the UFC.

I dont mean this all negatively because I too miss the LHK; it was probably the coolest thing in MMA. I just strongly feel were going to see “the old” CroCop come back and show those tree trunks he calls legs still break bones if someones brave enough to catch one.

Also this new MIA sectional is a cool idea and I still look forward to reading Rampages slams haha

Thanks for the input GB.

This is really just a nostalgia feature seeing as how I wanted an excuse to write about the moves I really miss seeing and would love to see again someday.

Cro Cop has obviously had a lot of body/leg kick T/KO’s, but the LHK is iconic and way more of an exclamation point IMO.

Poor Cro Cop...

His performance last night against Dos Santos was a far cry from the man who once stared down the barrel of a 357 Magnum — in the form of Fedor — and kept on coming.

Yesterday was a truly sad day for all those who knew and loved the former devastating striker from Croatia whose competitive career surely has ended.

That being said, Bring on Cro Cop/Kimbo!!!!!!!
