Takanori Gomi Signs with the UFC

Don't be sad Gomi, you're in the UFC now!

The UFC bought themselves a New Year's Day present.

MMA Fighting is reporting that the UFC has signed celebrated Japanese lightweight Takanori Gomi (31-5) to a multi-fight deal.

During the summer the Pride and Shooto veteran had mentioned that he was entertaining an offer from the UFC though he would later agree to fight at the canceled Affliction: Trilogy.

The end of Takanori Gomi's free agency could be viewed as a denial of resources towards Strikeforce or Bellator as both promotions have been scooping up available talent. Gomi did fight Strikeforce's Nick Diaz and while Gomi initially lost the bout it was later ruled a "No Contest" by the NSAC as Diaz tested positive for marijuana.

After the Diaz fight Gomi would later lose two fights in a row to questionable talent. For a brief moment it appeared as though the sun had set on a celebrated fighter. Declarations of Gomi's demise may have been premature as he rebounded with two straight wins over Tony Hervey and Takashi Nakakura.

Star-divide

Takanori Gomi made a surprise visit on Dana White's vlog though Gomi didn't quite understand what it was.

Bummer this signing is probably 3 years too late, but it will be nice to have another fighter with dynamite in his hands. Maybe Gomi can hook up with a camp that can shore up some of his recent short comings, he is still a relatively young guy.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Gomi pick off some of the elite wrestles in the 155lb weight class that suddenly think they have good stand up.

him knocking sherk out of any kind of relevance would be nice

I can’t picture that fight being much different than their first one.

they could hold the event in hawaii. very large japanese population on the islands

i think i heard dana white say he would hold some kind of event in hawaii and this fight would be perfect to headline it. they could also add k. grove and it could be just a ufc fight night or a fight night for the troops or something like it. i,m sure penn would have no problem with this and he very popular there so i bet they would easily sell the arena out and it could get some good tv ratings if they had a few more good matchups.

First, this would be SWEET!

Second, the possibility of Hawaii has been floated before since they readjusted the tax on the live gate
