Gray Maynard vs. Nate Diaz and UFC Fight Night 20 Hangover

Bingeg_468x317_medium

Some thoughts while I recover from my Fight Night 20 hangover...

- Gray Maynard probably needed a hghlight reel finish to get a title shot and he certainly didn't deliver though not from a lack of trying. Unfortunately he probably just helped made the case for Frankie Edgar rather than himself by not wrestling.

- If Nate Diaz was considered a class act as oppose to a bad apple there might be a larger outcry to that split decision.

- God bless Efrain Escudero because just when I was starting to think TUF 8 wasn't a complete garbage season he goes and proves me wrong.

- All mocking of TUF aside, Escudero looked good in that first round and just got way too overconfident and Dunham made him pay for it.

- How excited are you to see Evan Dunham fight again? That boy is legit to come back from almost being finished to win via armbar

- Hopefully Efrain Escudero's arm is not broken (Update: it isn't) but if it is let that be a lesson to all you hard asses who think that tapping is for cowards.

- Tom Lawlor made Aaron Simpson's face his personal punching bag for five minutes but couldn't finish him. That's a lot like a team going into halftime up by one possession despite dominating the first half in every statistical category. Usually, that means there could be some trouble on the horizon.

- For the record I am pretty sure Aaron Simpson's chin is made of Adamantium. How else do you explain how he absorbed all those power punches and kept coming back for more?

- Does that mean Evan Dunham is Deadpool?

- Aaron Simpson's performance in the Lawlor fight was the equivalent of someone getting way too drunk way too fast at the bar. Yet they continue to do shots till 3:00am before attempting to walk home and somehow makes it home to his bed without dying or passing out.

- Tom Lawlor may have moved past just the funny guy. Good for him.

- For the record, the UFC and Spike didn't show Lawlor's Hulk Hogan inspired entrance. Don't fail me youtube!

- On paper there was little difference between the fights on this card and all of the fights on UFC 108 with the exception being the Evans-Silva fight. Last night we got poor fights that went the distance resulting in controversial decisions. At UFC 108 we got quick action packed fights. Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you get unlucky. Just be glad you didn't have to pay for this one.

- Amir Sadollah may actually be good someday but he is still green and I am not jumping on that bandwagon just yet.

- I do love Sadollah use of the front kick. In my opinion it is underused in MMA right now.

- I get that the 18-34 male demographic is extremely lucrative, which is why it is great that the demo is the UFC's bread and butter, but what does having an event watched by that demo really mean? It means that the television viewer has to be inundated with shitty commercials, for horrible movies, video games, energy drinks, fast food and Kid Rock bourbon. Wooo!!

- For the record I am in that demo and I love me some Kid Rock Bourbon.

- If I see that damned Grandma from the Legion trailer again I might have to go to a diner and tell a pregnant lady the world is going to end just to steal her thunder.

- The UFC pimped UFC 109's main event between Randy Couture and Mark Coleman as, "the first time ever that two UFC hall-of-famers will meet inside the cage." A pessimist would read that and wonder if this meant the UFC were implementing a PGA-style senior tour.

- Could the D.C. fans stop booing for one minute? That stadium had zero atmosphere to it other than boos. I felt like I was watching a regular season NBA game for the Wizards.

 - (18 – 34) male demographic comment, I totally agree.

- Agree with the use of front kicks. Diaz threw 2 or 3 front kicks that were very effective.

1. Agree with Efrain getting too cocky. I feel like he started believing the massive hype around him. He delivered in round 1, and decided to take a break as if the same result was going to happen in the next round.

2. Amir impressed. Alot of sites picked him to lose but for him to go out there and dominate a veteran in Blackburn like that shows something.

3. I think this is the first time the UFC advertised all 5 main card fights. Maybe they are hearing fans statements about the star-power of recent cards
