Tekken Trailer Hits the Web: Was it worth it Roger?

No, it wasn't worth it...

No, it wasn't worth it...

The first trailer for the live action Tekken movie has hit the interwebs and it looks almost as bad as the Dragon Ball movie and that might be doing Dragon Ball a disservice. (Check it out after the jump).

So why is this MMA news? It is due to the film presence of both Roger Huerta and Cung Le.

For Cung --the former Strikeforce middleweight champion-- this is his second Hollywood offering as he was also featured in the sci-fi thriller Pandorum.

For Huerta this movie represents both the top and the decline from a once bright UFC career. Roger was 14-1-1 when he entered the UFC and he proceeded to go on a six fight win streak; culminating in a come-frombehind victory over Clay Guida in the main event of The Ultimate Fighter 6 Finale in December of 2007. Huerta appeared to be a future star for MMA's top promotion and was the first fighter to be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

Huerta was clearly a hot commodity and he took a role in the movie adaptation of the popular video game Tekken in February of 2008. At the same time Roger entered contract negotiations with the UFC and things got ugly. Huerta and the UFC didn't see eye-to-eye on several issues and negotiations bogged down. Worse for Roger, he still had fights left on his current contract. After fighting six times for the UFC in 2006-07 Huerta only fought twice in 2008-09, both loses.  With so much downtime Huerta --who was spending an exorbitant amount of time with That 70's Show's Laura Prepon-- mentioned his desire to pursue acting full time.

Now Huerta has completed his UFC contract with back-to-back losses, is currently in Thailand training and waiting for an offer from a different promotion. So, was it worth it?

Trailer after the jump.

Star-divide

Holy crap does this movie even have a plot other than a horrible attempt to string together some shitty fight sequences. At least the Street Fighter movie tried (I think, somewhat cleverly) to invent for the game's fighters and attempt to weave them into a script. This, well, it looks like it was written on a napkin 15 minutes after the writers strike ended.

Was it worth it? No.

Huerta is a fool. With the UFC trying to break into the Mexican market he would have been a huge star. The UFC was promoting him out the ass. They were giving him favorable matchups for a good while and he was performing.

Now he cant even sign anywhere till November and the UFC has shown no interest in him at the moment for taking the acting route and choosing not to sign an extension.

But hey, when he gets to fight Gurgel in November I am sure it will hit him how far he has fallen

One thing people need to understand about the latino (Mexican) market. Just cause a fighter is Mexican doesn’t mean they will be a huge star in Mexico. Huerta wouldn’t have been viewed as Mexican. It took Oscar De la Hoya beating Julio Cesar Chavez to become a Mexican hero. Huerta doesn’t have that in the UFC. That’s part of the reason they have shifted focus to Miguel Torres and Cain Velasquez, they actually look Mexican and have that hard worker background.

Oscar was never really accepted by the Mexican Community because he beat Chavez and because his style isnt “Mexican” ie (taking off rounds too ride out decisions).

Huerta had a real tough background growing up as a kid. His style is what they love.

Looks like Bloodsport all over again. With darker lighting and without Ogre. Plus the kid looks a like a much better actor than JCVD, which takes some of the comedy out…

I always thought it was hilarious when people sold Huerta as “the SI cover boy.” The damn cage was the subject of the photo. Huerta was just the guy in it at the time.

true, but it was historical, and it gave the PR reps something to sell
