Diego Sanchez heading back to Welterweight?

The walk of shame

Diego Sanchez may be considering a move back up to 170lbs.

Heavy in the sense of what weight class he will next compete in. The New Mexico native on Sunday night left a somewhat cryptic message via his Facebook page stating "going back up to 170."

When contacted by MMAWeekly.com, Jeff Clark, Sanchez's manager, indicated that there has been no official decision made at this time about what weight class he will compete in next.

Going back to welterweight could be a horrible decision.

If Diego really wants to become a champion he probably has a better chance by staying put in the lightweight division. There is a strong probability that Penn will leave the division by the end of this year or early 2011. Besides if Sanchez was taken to the woodshed by Penn at 155 how would Diego fair against St. Pierre who made Penn his personal chew toy at 170 early last year.

Besides, WKR isn't so sure that Sanchez could actually climb through the welterweight ladder to fight St. Pierre even with the UFC's desperate need for contenders. Could Diego beat Fitch, Koscheck, Swick or Alves? Sanchez was already handled easily by two of them.

There are still several meaningful bouts at 155lbs. for Diego and he could find himself fighting for a vacant lightweight title in 2011. Plus we would probably get to see Sanchez vs. Florian II and who wouldn't want to watch that fight?

On the other hand Carlos Condit vs. Diego Sanchez would be a lot of fun to watch.

Damn

guess Penn ran him outta Dodge. Between him, Silva & St. Pierre, they’re gonna need to add more weight classes just so people can feel like they have a chance at a title.

Pee-pee money is not an employment history.

hmmmm

While I agree Diego’s chances for a title seem even slimmer at 170, saying Kos and Fitch handled him easily is a bit of an overstatement. It’s well documented Kos got to fight Diego at much less than 100%, and the Fitch fight was a split decision, where Fitch’s top control was judged more dominant than Diego’s submission attempts.

That said, Diego’s still a longshot to earn a crack at GSP, and a million-times longer shot to win it.

In all truthieness

He looked really feeble in those matches which probably painted your memory somewhat. He barely looked sober in that Kos one.
