Condit vs. MacDonald at UFC 115

MMA Mania reports that former WEC welterweight champion, Carlos Condit (25-4), will fight UFC newcomer Rory MacDonald (10-0) at UFC 115 in Vancouver, British Columbia Canada.
Carlos Condit was recently cleared to return to the UFC after suffering a deep cut on his hand, which would later require surgery after becoming infected. Condit's injury forced him to withdraw from a fight with Pual Daley.
Rory MacDonald is coming off of a dominating win over Michael Guymon in his UFC debut at Fight Night 20. MacDonald is also a former King of the Cage lightweight champion.
WKR can't help but feel puzzled by this match-up. MacDonald is widely considered to be a top prospect within the welterweight division but a fight against Condit seems unnecessary at this stage in Rory's development. Why throw him in the deep end of the pool for his second fight? While Condit's UFC run is a far cry from his dominance in the WEC he is still a well rounded and experienced fighter who will be a challenge for most fighters at 170lbs.
Perhaps this is simply the UFC putting a local British Columbia fighter, in MacDonald, on the UFC 115 fight card?
Feel free to tell us our confusion is unwarranted.

MacDonald strikes me as talented, but still kinda raw. Condit is definitely a step up, but hasn’t exactly been a world-beater in the UFC, so I don’t think it’s all that dramatic of a leap.
Interesting that they would step MacDonald up that quickly though, you’d think they’d give him a TUF alumni or two first. Maybe he asked for a tougher fight, who knows.
This has to be on the main card, right?
if they did this,

then they could have it as a preliminary fight on Spike.
I just don’t get throwing a perceived top prospect in the deep end soooooo fast

Macdonald
is way over his head in this fight. Big jump from Joker Guymon to Carlos Condit.
And if that’s Carlos’s girlfriend in that picture all I can say is he’s done well for himself. Very nice.
