Herschel Walker on PTI
In our rambling Strikeforce podcast preview (we were trying a new format!) I mentioned that I was bitter of the media attention that Herschel Walker generated. Obviously a great football player, anda former Heisman winner will generate a certain amount of mainstream attention but credit is due to Walker for being humble and a good ambassador of the sport during his media tour.
Take for instance Walker's appearance on Pardon the Interruption where Herschel a spirited defense to well known MMA doubters Michael Wilbon and Tony Kornheiser (10:08 mark).
Tony Kornheiser: I got to say that in watching you over the years you always struck me as too sweet a person to hurt people. Am I wrong about this?
Herschel Walker: Well, I don't know that I'm stepping in the cage to hurt anyone. What it is, I'm stepping in the cage to compete...
Tony Kornheiser: But don't you have to pound somebody? We don't think of you as a pounder!
Herschel Walker: Well, what you have to do is knock him out. You don't have to pound him you just have to knock him out...
Michael Wilbon: Any part of you-Herschel, worried about getting injury?
Herschel Walker: No I am not. This sport has been cleaned up...I think, and people would argue with me on this, football and boxing is worse. In boxing you get knocked down, they give you a standing eight count, you're still woozy and then you get back in there and fight. In football you've got all the concussions. Years ago this was a brutal sport, years ago there's no way I would have gotten involved in it, but it has become a sport, it has become an art...
Funny, I think WKR has been saying that for a while...
