Washed-Up Boxer Wants a Crack at the UFC (Update #2)

James Toney staked out UFC 108 in order to issue a challenge to UFC president Dana White: Toney wants to fight in the UFC.

These videos have been making the rounds but I figured I would pass them along.

On one level it is kind of sad to see an over forty boxer (and former steroid user) go through with such an obvious stunt. But on another level it is pretty freaking hilarious to see White and Toney trade verbal jabs. Apparently, this isn't the first time that Toney has been trying to get a booking in the UFC.

Update: Please tell me this isn't true but I guess Dana White is actually going to meet with Toney.

Update #2: Toney spoke to FightHype.com and the results are laughable.

"They talking about ground game? That don't mean nothing to me dog. Number one, I ain't going to allow none of them boys to lay on top of me like a lil' fag, you know what I'm saying? I ain't going to the ground; that ain't happening, you know what I'm saying?
...I know a lot of them thinking they would fuck me up and they gonna shoot in on me and all of that, but I ain't going to the ground; that ain't happening. I got one of the best mixed martial arts trainers in the world, which is my daddy. You know what I'm saying? He is one of the original death fighters. They fought to the death like in them movies, but it's a matter of time. I will be ready to go."

THis will never happen

If it did, I would never purchase a UFC PPV as long as Toney was signed, possibly never even again.
For Dana to even entertain this makes him look like an ass for criticizing Coker for signing Walker. At least Walker has a martial arts background.

OK, I’m not crazy about 40+ James Toney in an MMA match but are you ignoring his boxing background. Boxing is actual combat experience. Hershel Walker spent his prime competitive years as a professional football player.

I’m mainly against it because he doesn’t look like he’s in shape, but I don’t have any proof. Toney’s assertion that it would be a huge event is really off because Toney wasn’t a huge box office draw in boxing.

But if it happens, then it would be really interesting to see because when was the last time a former professional boxer entered the Octagon? There’s no backlash when former national wrestling champions enter the Octagon.

It’s sad what a guy will do for a paycheck.

To those who say it will never happen, I remember when guys were saying Kimbo Slice would NEVER, EVER fight in a UFC octagon. And as far as washed up boxers being any comptition for elite MMA fighters, does Tim Sylvia vs. Ray Mercer ring any bells?

Listen, this isn’t likely to happen, and if it does, Toney has no clue what he would be getting into. My point is, Never say Never.
