Strikeforce: Miami Hangover

Oh Rockstar girls, you make Strikeforce

Some thoughts while I recover from my Strikeforce: Miami hangover...

First, the real fights

- Nick Diaz won the vacant Strikeforce welterweight title with a TKO victory over DREAM welterweight champion, Marius Zaromskis.

- Can we give Nick Diaz the nickname "punches in bunches." At the very least it would be a good kids cereal brand for some MMA cross-promotion. Diaz would do well with kids, right?

- Depending on what sport you follow Nick Diaz's boxing style is the equivalent of the Houston Texans, Toronto Raptors or the Texas Rangers. In other words all offense no defense. For history buffs Diaz is the General Hood of MMA.

- Marius had a nice little comeback in the middle of the first round as he dropped and cut Diaz. Then again cutting Nick Diaz is as simple as making Saw sequels.

- Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos decisively defeated Marloes Coenen to retain her Strikeforce title.

- I am pretty sure "Cyborg" has reached the "I will pick her to win by whatever she wants" while fighting at 145lbs.

- Credit to Coenen for sticking in there and trying to mount an offense.

- I wonder if Marloes still thinks if "Cyborg" is only human.

Who replaced Robbie Lawler with Scott Smith?

- Was Robbie Lawler playing the rope-a-dope or did he just get lucky after getting his ass kicked?

- Who cares! That was unfreakingbelievable!

- I still think it was a horrible idea to stand with Melvin who battered the crap out of Lawler's leg and body in just three minutes.

- Our friends at MiddleEasy had an ad on Melvin Manhoef's shorts. Looked like a really smart move for three minutes there...

- This was the only televised fight (I am including the Hieron-Riggs bout for some reason) where the underdog won.

Would you like a side of Freak with your show?

- Herschel Walker looked competent in his fight against Greg Nagy but does it really even matter? Nagy was a bum. There was no chance he would win let alone put up a fight. Yes, it is impressive that Walker is doing this at 47. Yes, he generates media attention and hopefully he brought in new fans, but let's not kid ourselves; that was freak show.

- In the other freak show fight Bobby Lashley beat Wes Sims. Please have him fight someone better.

- Strikeforce kept describing Wes Sims as "colorful." This code word means "he was the funny guy on TUF who, hopefully, more people know than Jimmy Ambriz."

- Jordan Breen of Sherdog said that Sims made $30,000. Who here wouldn't let Bobby Lashley beat them up for that much money?

- Any good freak show needs some comic relief. Thank goodness we had a Rex Ryan appearance.

- Did Jenn Brown call Rex Ryan the head quarterback coach of the New York Jets? WKR still loves Jen though, she's a blond football reporter who wears--well, I am not sure what you call that...

Major Electronic Arts FAIL (I still like Mass Effect though..)

- EASports.com was suppose to stream the #1 contender bout between Jay Hieron and Joe Riggs but it was an unmitigated disaster. The stream didn't work, it failed to load and if it did load you had to sign up for a newsletter in order to access the stream, which was then laggy and choppy. FAIL

- Strikeforce/Showtime/Electronic Arts are all culpable in this catastrophe. Though Showtime would like you to know its not there fault, its all EA's fault.  Way to fall on your sword EA MMA. Hooray for Self-Righteous Outrage!

- Can Jay Hieron get screwed over more?

Your obligatory Strikeforce vs. UFC comments

- Georges St. Pierre was at the Strikeforce fights. Shouldn't he have been watching the UFC 107 replay tonight? (courtesy of Retep732)

- The UFC sent out this tweet during the broadcast

Ufc_medium

- Not sure if mentioning, even if not by name, Strikeforce in a tweet that goes out to nearly 100,000 followers is prudent considering that Strikeforce has less than a thousand. It is usually smart politics not to talk down. Let me put it this way, how often do you see a governor name a competitor who holds a lesser office in an op-ed or press release?

Nice Recap.

I kind of understand now why Strikeforce wasn’t eager to get the Hieron/Riggs fight on TV.

Coker said to MMA Fighting that Hieron’s win last night was the last on his contract and that Mach Sakurai would be getting the next title shot against Diaz.
Hieron might be all done in Strikeforce.

That Lawler KO was unexpected to say the least. I’m a Lawler fan and kept thinking to myself he’s not going to be able to walk for weeks when this is over and then in an instant Manhoef was gone.

And LOL at Jenn Brown calling Rex the Jets quarterbacks coach, but I’ll give her a pass because she looked damn good last night.

Jenn Brown

Total Score for the Night: Negative Infinity

You had the “head quarterbacks coach,” some useless questions for Herschel Walker and stating Brett Rogers gave Fedor his toughest test to date… I know she’s only doing her job, but she doesn’t do it very well.

Being a pretty blond girl only gets you so far… admittedly, it’s farther than my being a moderately attractive brown-haired gentleman, but still.
