Scott Coker on Potential Fights for Strikeforce
MMA Fighting's Michael David Smith talked to Strikeforce CEO, Scott Coker, about the promotion's upcoming plans. Some of the potential fights are obvious while others are surprises.
Bobby Lashley (5-0) vs. Brett Rogers (10-1)
This is just straight out of left field. WKR doesn't believe for a second that Lashley's management would sign on to this fight nor would we really want to see it. While Rogers is their second biggest (no pun intended) heavyweight name, well, legitimate name, why throw him against Lashley when Antonio Silva is out there? The winner of that fight could take on the winner of Fedor-Werdum. If Strikeforce wants to give Bobby a better opponent why not try to grab Arlovski or Sylvia?
Gilbert Melendez (17-2) vs. Shinya Aoki (23-4)
Scott Coker and Strikeforce have talked about this fight before. While WKR would love to see this fight we have are doubts about it coming to fruition. Both fighters are champions in their respective promotions and with Aoki being one of DREAM's big stars one has to wonder if they would really risk potentially unifying the titles or having their big name lose in the United States?
Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos (9-1) vs. Erin Toughill (10-2-1)
Another fight that most observers saw coming. Toughill's boxing might give her a better chance against Cyborg then Coenen had last night. Hopefully the 145lbs. women's tournament Strikeforce is organizing can find the next opponent for Cyborg the winner of this fight.
Nick Diaz (21-7) vs. Hayoto Sakurai (35-10-2)
Sakurai is an old Pride veteran but he was recently knocked out by Marius Zaromskis, the fighter Diaz just beat. Plus Hayoto just lost to Akihiro Gono. But the big question: What about Jay Hieron?
I guess that means Jay Hieron is being passed over again? Worst, Hieron is now a free agent, which makes it prudent for Coker to say he wants a different welterweight fight in case Strikeforce can't re-sign Jay. But at the same time Strikeforce has been feeding information about Hieron fighting for a title shot ever since they signed him. WKR is not sure if the UFC is really willing to swoop in and grab him as they had their chance when Affliction folded. Plus there is that whole EA fighters are "banned" thing. It will be interesting to see what develops out of this situation.

The can crusher will finally get a decent match up, but I may be speaking to early as I’m not sure about rogers’ ground game. I bet ashley will act like a biotch and say that he’ll stand and trade with him and then take him down asap like he did when he fought sapp.
The cyborg fight will hopefully be a better fight. I just hope erin doesn’t start talking smak after she lost like conen did. It’s funny how hypocrital she is, she was braggin’ and recalling her fight after she beat her last apponent, but now she doesn’t remember the ass beatin’ she took.
YEAH! bring on aoki, I want to see how he’ll fare against such a stronger, dominant, and somewhat well rounded wrestler like gilbert. I got my money on gilbert, I hope aoki doesn’t resort to draggin’ his ass on the mat for when he can’t get the fight to the ground. However, I feel like strikeforce should allow PRIDE rules (soccer kicks and knees to a downed apponent) to prevent aoki from stalling.
As for diaz, just good to see him fight again. Pretty soon people will start calling him the best P4P fighter. Overall, good fight scott, good fights.
I enjoy any fighter who
A. crushed Shinya Aoki’s head with his knees on the ground old school Pride style and
B. made a sex tape of a threesome without his wife and two other ladies.
That takes balls (pun intended)
