Kimbo Slice on Versus?

Kimbo-versus_medium

Sneaked neatly at the end of a report coming from MMA Junkie was the rumor that Kimbo Slice could fight on Versus on March 21st in Denver, Colorado.

No word on a possible opponent for the ratings bonanza that is Kimbo Slice

For those who are confused about Slice's possible presence on Versus here is a quick history lesson.

Zuffa, the parent company of the UFC and the WEC, which previously had a deal with Versus, recently renewed their contract with the Comcast owned sports station. Part of that new deal was Versus grabbing the right to broadcast two live UFC events in 2010. The UFC promptly scheduled top light heavyweight prospect Jon Jones and Brandon Vera to fight on March 21st for the first ever UFC event to be broadcast on Versus.

The presence of Kimbo Slice may indicate that both Zuffa and Versus want a strong showing for the inaugural broadcast though WKR isn't so sure that putting Kimbo Slice in a fight at altitude is a smart idea. Just saying....

I guess I do not understand why hardcore fans, bloggers, journalists, whatever are still offended by/resistant to the idea of Kimbo Slice in the UFC or MMA in general. I get that people are disppointed or disgusted by the fact that Kimbo hasn’t genuinely tried to become more well rounded or even shore up his ground game. But most people tune into watch an interesting character, not a highly skilled, well rounded mixed martial artist. Eventually he will get exposed beyond repair or actually do well. Either way the UFC is going to run out of guys so limited in their skill set that he will be forced to sink or swim. Lets be honest, he is no spring chicken. I don’t think we can expect to see his skills evolve like Jon Jones.

Kimbo will draw regardless on PPV or cable. This can only be good for the other fighters on the card, right? IMO, it gives them a little more bargaining power with sponsors. There is what you could call a trickle down effect, bleeding effect, rub, ect. they will recieve just by being on the card. There will be new eyes watching the UFC and the sport of MMA. He can be the hook that gets people interested in the sport. Let other fighters be the ones that keep them interested.

I just realized the article was bagging on Kimbo’s cardio and the fact the fight is in Denver, not bagging on Kimbo in general.

I always make the mistake of reading these new posts prior to my morning coffee, not after. Sorry if I sounded a tad whiny.

Honestly i’ve been as harsh on Kimbo as anyone and have enjoyed seeing him get beatdown. But his performance in the Alexander fight won me over, he made it an actual fight and showed some improvements in his game. It showed me he is taking things seriously and while he’ll never be a champion, I look forward to seeing him continue his fighting career in the UFC.

this will great for the ufc. I think it will draw alot more eyes to sport if kimbo is on free tv. I think it makes more sense to have him on free tv, to draw the fans to the sport. Once they are hooked they will start buying ppvs
