Winner of Coleman vs. Couture will be #1 Contender?
Randy Couture certainly believes so:
"From what I've been told the winner of this fight could be next in line for the title, though that's could be next in line for the title, though that's not something that is guaranteed so I really need to come in at my best and make a case for myself"
At first glance Couture's comments seem preposterous as Couture has only one victory over Brandon Vera in the 205 lbs. division while Coleman's sole victory since coming out of retirement is over Stephan Bonnar. But in reality the UFC is short on light heavyweight contenders and the winner of this fight could find themselves as the #1 contender.
The strongest competition for the position of #1 contender certainly comes from the winner of the Rashad Evans-Quinton "Rampage" Jackson fight, which is expected in May.

i would understand if rashad and rampage where nobodies then UFC could pull the name recognition card, but couture is telling himself this either because it helps motivate him or he may have a shot due to his legacy (I do not think he does). There is no way Coleman gets a title shot if he beats Randy.
Clearly Rashad/Rampage will get the title shot if timing works out (especially if Rampage wins) as their fight will do huge numbers, they both have TUF bump, and both would be deserving.

Neither deserve a shot, but that doesn’t mean they won’t get one. I wouldn’t pay to see it either way.
And is it just me or is Mark Coleman slowly turning into Jimmy Durante?

Delusional.
I can see how Couture could compete for the LHW. After all, he is the former LHW champion, former HW champion and the UFC just love conveniently giving title shot opportunity after title shot opportunity.
But Mark Coleman?
