Cheick Kong-Seco: Y'all MMA Fighters Need to Stop Using Them Steroids

Kongo - Natural Man

UFC Fighter Chieck Kongo spoke with French fighting site Riddum.com before his UFC 120 fight against Travis Browne. While he spoke of his upcoming fight, he also spoke on another big subject, steroids.

R.: You certainly did not miss the steroid allegations surrounding Chael Sonnen that came under the spotlight these past few weeks. Dennis Hallman stated that at least 50% of MMA fighters take PEDs. Nate Diaz also said that everybody was on steroids, you should be surprised when somebody DOES NOT test positive rather than be surprised when someone DOES test positive. Is it safe to assume that a lot of MMA fighters take steroids to give themselves an edge?

C.K.: 50%, if not more**... What can I say, other than we need to stay away from all of that. It's not easy to put things into perspective, especially if you believe that you have a disadvantage from the get go. For some athletes, it's hard to hold up physically and mentally- the pressure, the obligation to stay on top - everything pushes you to take steroids. For me, PEDs aren't the solution. Taking PEDs jeopardizes your health and it's cheating. I am a fighter; I owe my victories to my hard work, my training, the fact that I push myself beyond the limit, the sacrifices I make to a life almost entirely dedicated to sports. Nothing else. Stay away from the needles. You can succeed without them.

Kongo says what many fans of true fighting believe; that many MMA fighters use PEDs. He's one of the rare current UFC fighters to speak out against steroids. I just hope he doesn't renege on what he said like Dennis Hallman after getting that contract.

Kongo also had one more interesting thing about the UFC and the rule system which comes after the jump:

Star-divide

R.: If you could change one of these rules in the UFC today, which it would be: a reduction in value of the takedowns by judges , A yellow and red card system like in PRIDE, judging of a fight in its entirety and not round by round, faster clinch separations/quicker standups, a smaller cage or another rule?

C.K. : Yes, I would return to the Yellow and Red card system for a lack of engagementsystem of the paperboards yellow or red for lack of engagement and I would go back to one-day tournaments. Also, those that get a title shot should only get it as a result of their fights (a certain number of victories for example).

Sound like Kongo wants those one-day tournaments. Kongo in PRIDE would've been serious business

At least he claims to never use PED's.

I’ve learned to never trust an athlete.

Kongo, you’re the LAST guy in the world I’d expect to advocate for yellow/red cards.

That said, comparing him to Canseco (an admitted PED user) is a little much.
