It was yet another great night of fights presented by the UFC, after the jump we break down the highlights of the evening, including the Spike TV prelims, Jake Shields struggle against Martin Kampmann, and Cain Velasquez dethrone Brock Lesnar with ease.

Star-divide

To kick the night off, we were treated to two good fights on Spike TV. The first bout saw Tom Lawlor outclass former Middleweight contender Patrick Cote on the ground and get back into the win column with a unanimous decision.  We then saw TUF winner Court McGee come back from a rough first round against Ryan Jensen, to finish the fight in the third round with a slick arm triangle.

After a "stand and bang" affair where Brendan Schaub took a unanimous decision against veteran Gabriel Gonzaga, Matt Hamill defeated his friend, and former coach, Tito Ortiz with a clear cut unanimous decision.  Tito looked rather good in the first round, but faded quickly after taking hard shots from Hamill throughout the second and third.  Although Tito is well beyond his prime, there are a few fights worth seeing him in, one of which I believe is another fight with Chuck Liddell.  Hamill will likely go on to get another chance at breaking through the gatekeepers of the light heavyweight division once again, but I'm not sure if he'll ever make it to title contention.  I don't care though, he gives me the warm fuzzies with his feel good sports story, and humble demeanor.

Diego Sanchez returned to form against Paulo Thiago, although he still looks softer than his time spent at welterweight earlier in his career.  Sanchez dropped the first round, but rallied to victory in what was quite possibly the two most exciting rounds of the night that followed.  Paulo Thiago is a gamer, but when the guy your fighting picks you up, screams and jumps through the air to slam you, you have to take some time to think about life, your career choice, and what you've done to make this guy so mad.  Mr. Thiago just happened to take two full round to do that thinking, and save for some upkicks, and kimura attempts, he didn't accomplish much at all.

Jake Shields got his UFC career of to a rough start, but was successful against Martin Kampmann.  Shields easily took the first round, squeaked by the second, and dropped the third, getting visibly exhausted as the fight went on.  The cut to welterweight after fighting middleweight in Strikeforce most likely had a negative effect on him, but his grappling prowess is not to be trifled with.  Shield fought through every submission attempt Kampmann threw at him, and almost always ended up on top afterwards.  Kampmann had the most success in the clinch, landing quite a few knees to the chin of Shields, but his decision to fight on the ground in the third round may have cost him the fight.  I hope Shields can gain his bearings and find his place in the UFC welterweight division.

It only took on round for Cain Velasquez to run through the man mountain Brock Lesnar.  Lesnar started the fight with an attempted shot, turned into a flurry of knees, then an eventual takedown, which lead to Velasquez quickly finding his way back to his feet.  The men trader shots, and after some clinching against the fence, Cain got the better of Brock in an exchange that ended with a hard knee, and Brock dropped similar to how he did with Carwin.  Brock fought him off for a while, but after turtling up, then falling to his back and eating a few shots, Herb Dean stopped the fight, and Velasquez became the new, UFC Heavyweight Champion.

3-2 on this card.

I had Lesnar, Shields, Sanchez, Hamill, and Gonzaga going into this one.

I think it’s almost safe to say the Gabe Gonzaga experiment is a failed one. I’m still not sold on Schaub as the next big thing though. I’d like to see Schaub/Mitrione, but they’ll probably keep those two prospects apart for now. Schaub/Struve maybe?

I could see Dana keeping Tito around just so that Strikeforce doesn’t get him. I think any illusions that Tito could still be sold as a contender are officially over though. More was lost than win in the Hamill victory over Ortiz IMO. Ortiz is even more done now than he was before, while hamill’s arguably still in the same spot he’s been for awhile.

Great fight there between Paulo and Diego. Working with Jackson really brings out the best in Sanchez and it really shows what a mistake it was for Diego to leave that camp when he did. I’m not sure where Thiago goes next from here, but I guess it’s back to the LW division for Diego and a rematch with Florian waiting in the wings?

Shields won that fight IMO…but he didn’t look impressive doing it IMO. Not sure how much the training injury and cutting weight again after fighting at MW may have affected his performance though. But now I’m really wondering if he’ll still get the next shot at GSP.

And Cain looked great. Better than I thought he would. he really exploited Lesnar’s weakness in the stand-up ad was able to pull the trigger in the way Carwin couldn’t by having the cardio to follow up on an assault like that.I thought not stopping the Lesnar/Carwin fight was the right call since you could see Lesnar actively defending, but the stoppage here was justified as Lesnar was turtling up. We all know JDS has next shot, so the real mystery is what’s next for Lesnar – rematch with Carwin after the Nelson fight, or Mir/Brock III?

A few thoughts to add...

Brock Lesnar got too far away from what he was doing best, and that’s being a methodical, well paced fighter. In his first fight with Frank Mir, he fought much like he did tonight, and was caught. Tonight, he was incredibly pumped, charging Velasquez like mad. At one point, he was slipping across the cage, doing a half assed cartwheel, that led to him getting crushed. Do NOT be surprised if this becomes a major point for Brock’s next camp. Slowing down, picking shots, MOVING. It’s one thing to be a rushing bull, but another to be a bull that knows WHEN to rush, and when to just be aware.

Hard night for Brock fans, but Velasquez is a great fighter, if anyone had to beat Lensar, I’m glad it’s him.

Yep.

What the fuck was he thinking? As soon as he took Cain down, he’s trying to just into side control.

Ended up not going, stayed home realizing that if things went poorly for Lesnar, an hour in the car with my wife would be a miserable end to a 30 dollar event…so, I stayed home, and when she started to rage over the Lesnar loss, I dropped her with the tranquilizer gun…

If only the tranquilizer gun part were true. I really do want check out an event in theaters just to see how it is and write about it though. One of these days.

Few things

- I really do hope Jake recaptures his form at 170, cause between him and Kampmann, I didn’t see much that would threaten GSP at this point. However, Jake was pretty smooth on the ground in the first round.
- Brock looked like he just didn’t belong. After the Carwin fight I knew he’d been exposed, but man, did Cain just give him and old-fashioned beatdown. You’d think for all the hunting he does, he’d remember to bring his gun to the knife fight.
- Brock needs to change up his camp. I think it’s all well and good to have a secretive camp in some compound where only guys you can call in “fifteen minutes” to come get your back if something is going down to train with you, but c’mon man. That militia, the British are coming, mentality is ridiculous for MMA. He needs guys that push him, that are better than him in all aspects, that will spar with him and beat him up. He’s gotta learn to get over his Cringer behavior.
- Sanchez looked awesome in the latter two rounds. What an enjoyable fight, especially after the snoozers before it.
- Also nice to see a couple quick finishes thrown in at the end. I was surprised at Yvel and how easily he got beatdown.

To add: lol at Rogan’s comment about a new era after Cain’s win. Sometimes Rogan just gets way too carried away.

Honestly, I think Brock needs to confide in Couture, and try to get the legend to help break him of old habits. The bad thing there is, Couture is becoming increasingly harder to tie down for a extended period of time. Thank goodness Lesnar has money.

Madsen beat the shaboopie out of Yvel. At least they’re doing SOMETHING right at Team DeathClutch…ouch, far too soon, it hurt me just to say that. lol

The real issue here is, Lesnar, I’m 99% certain will not move just to train somewhere. Thats why he brought his own team together, but the ditching of Greg Nelson is inexcusable. Nelson’s a quality trainer, and has connections that will allow Lesnar to fly in top quality guys without issue. In theory, Lesnar can now do what Chuck Liddell tried to do lately, and that’s correct old habits by long, quality time spent with good boxing coaches. Lesnar has the benefit of being, more or less, a clean slate. He just needs to overcome mental roadblocks, and learn how to take punches gracefully…

And work on SLOWING THE HELL DOWN. I’m not a fan of amped up Lesnar, he does his work best when he’s slow, and thinking. Just because people say and think you are a rushing bull, does not mean you have to fight like one.

lol.

As for Lesnar slowing down,I thought for sure he learned his lesson after Lesnar/Mir I, but I guess I was wrong. Whenever anyone bull rushes, I think of James “The Colossus” Thompson doing his gong and dash.

Brock needs to suck it up and move his camp to Holland.

Golden Glory would love to pound on him for several months.

the nightmare's back!

I lmao when diego picked up thiago ala matt hughes and carried him screaming and dropped him. I was rolling that was hillarious. I was like man, I hope he doesn’t knock himself out like maynard did slamming emerson. However, it was nice to see diego go back to his old ways…

brock, looks like he definately doesn’t like getting hit and folds very easily without retaliating. Big tim was right… I still like the dude, especially for his destruction of mur, but will also remember him for that epic dance.

There should be another fight instore for shield against lytle to really see who gets the next shot.
