Dana White's Big Announcement Revealed: UFC/WEC to Merge in 2011

Ariel Helwani gets the exclusive reveal:

The WEC will finish out the year with two shows, and in 2011 the WEC's lightweight, featherweight, and bantamweight classes will be coming to the UFC, with the promotion opening up the two new, lighter classes.  I have been bold about wanting to see this happen, but I didn't expect it to get done before 2012.  Regardless of when it was expected, it's HAPPENING, and that's awesome.  I cannot wait to see the UFC's promotional team get behind the great talent coming in.  And bravo for Helwani to break a story like this, freaking HUGE news.  No longer will I poke fun at Dana White's "Big Announcements" for not being big, because this was gigantic.

I guess the need the lower weight classes to make money internationally.

But if it means seeing less top names from the lower weight classes on Spike/Versus, I’m disappointed. He didn’t say that, but I’m concerned about it.
