Did GSP overtake Lyoto Machida as MMA's Most Boring?

Lyoto Machida was once known as the type that "manipulated the rules in his favor to win."

HERE IS MORE ON THIS DEBATE

Does finishing one fight a year mean a fighter is trying to finish???

Although extremely boring, the art of Machida kept him on the winning side of fights.

GSP proved against Koscheck that he can win, but has GSP taken over the persona asthe UFC’s most boring?

Over the past two years GSP has only been able to finish two fight.  His stoppage against B.J. Penn was without a doubt a rare one and Matt Serra was nothing but a one hit wonder.

While stating that GSP is boring may get its own share of debate, one thing that can’t be questioned is his ability to finish.  He has all of the skill in the world, but he chooses not to destroy.

Money doesn't bring happiness...but have you ever seen anyone pissed off on a Jet-Ski?

In his last 15 rounds it is far fetched to find one that he has lost, however it is just as difficult to find one where he laid it all out on the line and pushed for the finish.

Action vs. winning is not a debate.  A fighter’s job is to win.  Sure, they all say that being interesting is the priority, but winning is everything.

Kalib Starnes, Junie Browning, and Kimbo are all exciting and interesting fighters, but they all sucked!

Is game planning and his camp partially to blame?

Many feel that it is unfair to call GSP boring, and they may be right.  GSP’s understanding of MMA is a part of the reason he is arguably the best in the world.

The combination of the brilliant minds in his camp, and his understanding of the fight game put him at an extreme advantage.  Combine that with his athletic ability and experience, and you have one of the best ever.

This know how helps him game plan and fight in an intelligent manner.  While keeping his chin safe and out of trouble so that he can win is great, it does not always generate highlight reel knockouts, submissions, or strikes.

He is simply not willing to take three or four of their punches to land one of his.

This same safety net also results in him playing a prevent defense.  In this case it simply prevents the opponent from doing any real damage, while he does the same.

i expect this debate is going to get a lot of attention and tons of comments!

What do you guys think?

No. Well I’m sure glad I was here to answer that question.

Lyoto’s last boring fight was against Nakamura, over 3 years ago.

Nick Lentz is most boring.

And I’ve never seen a boring GSP fight.

You must have never seen one than.

GSP wont take a risk. It wins him fights but makes it boring… i find it hard that anyone can dispute how mind numbing it is to watch someone fight who doesn’t want to finish the fight. Too bad there are no yellow cards in American MMA. Not just GSP but many fighters do this to an even more extreme extent (I’m looking at you Fitch/Maynard).

At least GSP isn’t doing a lay and pray anymore… but honestly it’s just as boring when he never puts his opponent in danger of losing during a round.

I don't understand why he needs to take risks.

I mean I fucking hate it when Bob Stoops does stupid shit like that in football. (like going for it inside your own 50 on fourth and 5 when you have a ten point lead) But I digress, GSP is a master of the sport and watching someone that good is entertaining in and of itself.

It's really just a matter of perspective

Some people find history classes boring at school, others move on to study it in college. What’s boring to some isn’t necessarily boring to others.

Think of it this way

What fight of Georges would you show to a casual fan? The only post Serra KO fights that would come up are the Fitch fight and the second Penn fight.

I enjoyed the Kos rematch, but it isn’t something I would show to a casual fan, I would show it to a boxing fan to show them that mma fighters know how to strike though, same for Edgar/Penn 2.

The Machida/GSP comparison makes sense to me only because of their shared base in karate. GSP is using his jab but is still showing his kyokushin roots by making by doing the most damage with the first strike and stabbing into his opponent with it repeatedly.

Where they differ is that GSP will dictate the pace and establish the jab and be the aggressor while Lyoto will hang back waiting for a big enough window to land a hard counter strike.

People do not like to think. If one thinks, one must reach conclusions. Conclusions are not always pleasant.

Good analysis.

Both the Thiago and Hardy fights were pretty fun and I like the Kos fight as well. I mean none of his fights would garner as much interest with the casuals as one of Leonard Garcia’s fights but that doesn’t bother me.

Nope, me either. The less casuals see Garcia’s fights, the better off MMA as a whole will be.

I’d show them the Alves and Fitch fights. Those were great fights that showed GSP’s dominance in every aspect of MMA. Think of it like a “Learn everything about MMA in 25 minutes” lesson.

As long as Gray Maynard is in the UFC, GSP or Machida won’t be the most boring in that organization. And I’m not even sure Gray Maynard is the most boring fighter in there either (Nick Lentz comes to mind), but he’s certainly the most boring ‘high-profile’ fighter in the UFC.

that is why gsp needs to fight anderson silva. silva would make him do things he rather not try imho.

Why do canadians stick together? The same reason why Chris Horodecki turned his body and face around in his first WEC fight. SB Nation's public enemy #1.

If you really think GSP or Machida are too boring to watch

You have NO BUSINESS stinking up our sport. Piss off.

Neither are boring, this is terrible.
