Confessions after the break

Star-divide

  • Hey, I bet Dana White is happy. FINALLY one of his vindictive bookings worked. Kendall Grove was set up to fight Demian Maia and lose....and he did. So now Kendall will be cut. Rarely a boring fight, so why the cut? He spoke out. I like Kendall, have liked him ever since TEAM DAGGER days. He will be missed.
  • Maia looked, I mean he won, but he doesn't look like the Demian Maia of old. Did Silva's embarrassment at UFC 112 break him? Perhaps.
  • Bad judging. During the Nam Pham/Leonard Garcia fight, I predicted a bad decision and lo-and-behold, we got a bad one. I didn't enjoy this fight. I hate sloppy technique fights. I really do. This was drunken barroom brawling. Funny thing is, like someone said on BloodyElbow, I like the KOs that come from the fights.
  • Speaking of unprofessionalism, Joe Rogan. This is going to get me flack and some will just say "That's just Michaelson being Michaelson", but I felt his rant was very unprofessional. You'd never hear that in another sport and if you did, the announcer that did it would be in big trouble. I mean he kept going on and on in another fight about it.
  • Cody McKenzie WINS by, you guessed it, guillotine. C'mon now. How are you losing to this guy with a guillotine again? Dude, has a FINISHER in MMA.
  • The Hendricks fight was a great grappling exhibition. I enjoyed that fight much more than the opener.
  • More ROGAN RANTING in the Bonnar fight. Again, I agree with his rant, but there's a time and a place.
  • Who was this guy Stephan Bonnar was fighting? I mean they served Bonnar a can on a platter and he failed. I mean he beat him up soundly, but still.
  • Mazagatti actually did a good job reffing.  His deductions were warranted. I criticize him for doing a bad job often, so I will praise him when he gets things right.
  • I feel like I'm forgetting a fight.
  • Oh yeah. The main event. Brookins vs Johnson. The big question going into this match was is Brookins Black or White? I mean to me, he looks like he is an light-skinned Albino-ish Black dude. He has some Black features. But then, he thanked his family and they were White people. Actual White people. Was he adopted? I don't know. Oh yeah, the fight.
  • GREAT FIGHT. I thought Johnson wouldn't have much for Brookins. Boy did he prove me wrong. Johnson brought it in the first round, but Brookins' conditioning and wrestling skills proved to be the difference. These two beat the FUCK out of each other. I loved it. Man if Johnson works on his gas tank, he could be a force. Brookins needs to tighten up that striking and he could do somethings at 145.
  • This event was...the peas and carrots tonight. I mean it's healthy, but I'm not going back for seconds.
  • How did I forget the Koscheck/St. Pierre promo? Oh, I know, because it was not good. Man that sucked some of my interest out of the fight. This was lackluster. I'm sorry, but GSP...GSP. I mean Josh did his thing here, the best he could, but GSP's fight promotion skills are lacking. These type of face to faces are never really that great, but this wasn't one of the better ones.

Maia didn't look right to you?

I saw Maia look pretty good, all things considered. His stand-up didn’t look completely piss poor like it has at times…he still needs to put his hands up higher but he did a good job of dealing with Grove’s reach. On the ground, he controlled and neutralized Kendall who is no slouch BJJ-wise himself.

I thought he looked alright. I would’ve preferred to see Maia finish him, but I thought he looked alright.

Also,

My confession after the TUF 12 Finale:

It was utterly stupid of them not to show the Garza/ Paixao fight. There was absolutely NO good reason for that fight to air. It lasted less than a minute, ended in a brutal KO, and was the first EVER featherweight bout in the UFC. They could’ve edited it to not show the aftermath, if they chose, and it would’ve done a whole lot to add some life and intensity to an otherwise deliberate card.

Forget it Donny. You're out of your element.

It was a freaky knockout

Paixao got blasted and he didn’t move for a couple of minutes. They carried him off in a stretcher.

You got banned for being an asshole

Why is it Phan’s fault? How many people have finished Leonard Garcia?

He decisively won the fight and the judges messed it up. Your justification is nonsense and so are your thoughts on Joe Rogan. The rant was fantastic and I completely agree with it.

by SSreporters on Dec 5, 2010 3:33 PM EST reply actions

It wasn't Phan's fault.

I was making fun of Dana White’s STUPID justification of bad judging when he says “You shouldn’t leave it up to the judges”. I think that’s BULLSHIT. My point was Dana has said it so much in the past that I applied it here. Clearly, I didn’t believe it then and don’t now.

Hell, read the comments section, I predicted the bad decision. I saw that shit coming a mile away.

That's not exactly a premonition.

Garcia is notorious for giving BJ’s to judges pre fight.

Yeah I was about to skip to the next fight when I remembered who was fighting here. He threw enough volume in 1 and 3 to take them (not on my scorecards) so I kept watching. Brutal stuff.

Wish Phan had had the gas or the feel for the striking to open up on him again in the third.

I went over Garcia’s record on a whim. He’s actually only knocked out one Victor Estrada in 2001 and in 2008, Jens Pulver and Hiroyuki Takaya (0-2 WEC washout). That’s not much of a legacy of punching power. Almost all of his early wins are by submission (fat chance of that happening).

I still get the feeling watching him that he has more to offer, but limits himself to this fighting style for the money, like a poor man’s Chris Lytle.

I didn’t get the impression that Maia was lacking anything in that fight. No matter how good you are at the Jits, submitting defensive-minded black belts is a long shot.

The Garcia decision… such a robbery. Yet again. He would’ve been better off without that comment about his takedowns too. No “Don’t let it go to the judges” nonsense. It was just a straight up robbery. I didn’t hear Dana’s comments about the decision but it wouldn’t be the first time he’s selective about who he backs up after the scorecards.

Joe Rogan’s outburst about the judges was a little bit unprofessional but completely warranted. You would hear this in other sports, too. Soccer commentators will tear into a ref if they blow a call. Where MMA differs is that the promotions (or TV network they’re married to) are employing these guys, which is a slightly unfortunate situation. They’ve (had to?) downplayed a lot of bad calls in the past and it was refreshing to hear Joe calling it like it is.

The second rant about MMA’s sillier rules was too indulgent (and I didn’t agree with him entirely) and uncalled for.

My favourite fight of the (entire) night was Story-Hendricks. Phan deserved some pity money but I wasn’t thrilled about seeing Garcia get it over a much better fight between Story and Hendricks.

I think Bonnar looked pretty good but this was a gimme fight. Pokrajac is tough so I wasn’t surprised it wasn’t a finish but he looked a weigth class below Bonnar on top of the (perceived) skill differential.

No roundup for the Strikeforce massacre? :)

ive been banned from BE twice

both times for saying what everyone was thinking (the first time that people are taking themselves WAY to seriously and that MMA elitism should be frowned upon, and the second time for pointing out that KidNate’s headlines are engineered for pageviews over accuracy) that place is nothing more than a medium to house sycophants that stroke Nate’s ego (because any dissenting opinion is banned)

You think that was a silly reason for being banned SC, I was banned because I questioned how legit some of Sakuraba’s fights were in Pride. Which might seem like fighter bashing except for the fact that the guy has admitted to working fights in the past and Pride was incredibly shady with some of their moves.

Anyways as far as TUF I thought it was a good night of fight, Maia looked really good with is takedowns and ground and pound. Bonnar also looked good completelly dominating Igor and Brooking came back from a tough first round to pummel and expose Johnson. I wasn’t surprised that Garcia won not because of anything except the way Phan fought him he basically gave it away imo, I was surprised at how Story was able to deal with Hendricks wrestling for the most part. And I just shook my head at another guillotine by McKenzie, only disapointment was not being able to see Garza’s KO
