Confessions after the break

Star-divide

  • MAURO. Oh goodness why? I'll take Gus Johnson. Seriously, I will. Shave man, for reals. Frank Shamrock's face seemed a little sucked in. And I hate the obvious reading of cue cards. But I do dig the SUITS. Also, I love how they aren't afraid to mention other organizations or that Jake Shields beat Hendo even though Shields is gone.
  • I love Strikeforce's production (minus Mauro). It looks better, it's more "sportish". I hope you know what I mean by that. It just presents itself as if it's an athletic competition. I think that has to do with Showtime's production skills. The UFC looks dank and cliched. I love the way the cage is lit in SF, the chyron and everything.
  • The funny thing is that Strikeforce, to me, also out-spectacles the UFC too. The entrances are better as I think the ramp add to the presentation of the fighter as "better than the regular people". You don't need giant PRIDE-style entrances (though I love them the best), but something to let you know that this is a FIGHTER coming to FIGHT. Even NBA entrances have some spectacle to them.
  • Man, I love the Strikeforce intro. REALLY love it. When I said presenting athletes over presenting "warriors" (like the UFC intro), this is what I mean. They look like prizefighters and are treated as such.
  • I know this sounds like I'm a Strikeforce fanboy (or 0buS), but I'm not. One of the things i love about Strikeforce is that everyone doesn't fight the same. It seems like, outside of stars like Cain, Brock, Anderson, BJ, etc, there are a couple type of fighters. You have Mr. Wrestling, Mr. STANDANDBANGRR! and Captain Pointfighter. UFC fighters seem like when you hit the "Randomize" button on "CAF" and the appearances change, but it's still basically the same fighting styles.
  • Ok, I'm done. We open with "OSP", Ovince St. Preux. This guy is an athletic specimen. A former linebacker for the University of Tennessee. He's been fighting for 2 years and has 13 fights already. You know how you can look at people and see that they have "IT", OSP has "IT". He could be a star.
  • It was funny hearing him called "St. Pierre" a couple of times
  • As for the fight, wow, what was the ref thinking? This fight should've been stopped 2 or 3 times. I mean Benji wasn't defending himself AT ALL. I'm glad to see the judges weren't scared to give out 10-8 rounds as they were clearly needed in this fight.
  • Rewound the Tivo, the referee was Mike England.
  • I'm a big Jimmy Lennon Jr. fan. I dig him more than Buffer. I guess it's the boxing in me.
  • Mike Kyle, a 205er, is fighting the 10th best HW in the world. On short notice. I guess it's better than a marginal MW fighting the best HW in the world (FEDOR), so I can't be too upset. My thoughts are Kyle should get creamed here by Silva.
  • Ok, Mike Kyle dropped Silva? How did this happen? Seriously.
  • Mike Kyle DROPPED Bigfoot and beat him for the first round. He didn't put him away, but still. This is where the lack of elbows on the ground hurt Kyle. He could've dropped some on him.
  • Silva hit him with a GATOR ROLL and Kyle escaped. I loved it. Bigfoot gets on top and just ground-n-pounds him for the finish. Where is GSP? I'm not impressed by your performance. When I do my rankings, I could hear arguments of dropping Silva even with the win.
  • Hey it's WOOGIE! Woogie Lindland is still fighting? Color me surprised. (Hey S.C., didn't you just write an article where he said he was a top ten fighter). Oh yeah, I did. He's fighting Robbie Lawler? And Robbie has a beard. Didn't work for Brock or Johny Hendricks
  • Lindland wass STANDING with him and getting tagged. Why was he standing? RIGHT HAND! RIGHT HAND! RIGHT HAND! That's PETE ROSE! Woogie is OUT. So, the thing about this KO is that he falls on his face, then does a 180 and turns into a Lawler punch. Oh we're not done. You see, this is the dummy ref from the OSP fight Mike England. So Lawler looks at the guy like "Hey stupid, stop the fight" and throws his hands up. Finally England moves in and the kind-hearted Lawler, having been on the wrong end of a KO or two, puts Lindland's legs together.
  • Matt. Retire. Seriously. I could hear the doctors saying "He's out cold. He's knocked out completely."
  • Something I noticed. Strikeforce is learning. Lawler's camp was trying to come in and celebrate and the security did their jobs and waited.
  • LOL @ Semtex coming out in a "PUSS OUT" FightWear shirt. I'm going to rant here. I was hard on Daley when it happened because I am a huge Koscheck fan. It seems like that was forever ago, but it was less than 10 months ago. I don't think he should be "banned" from the UFC and frankly, he should be let back in as soon as he wants to be. If the UFC would take back Karo Parisyan after his numerous screwups, Daley should be back. He won't show up out-of-shape like Karo did either.
  • They came out swinging and it wasn't techniqueless brawling like the Nam Pham/Garcia fight. Man I enjoyed this "sprint". I just think Daley is super-talented. Scott Smith is a good fighter, but there's not a 170 lber that can really stand with Daley.
  • Just as Scott Smith found out. Daley was backing up and hit him with a counter left to the chin and just ended his night. Ric Flair would be proud of the Flair Flop Scott Smith did. And Daley doesn't follow it up with any shots, he just walks away.
  • Mauro. Please stop. "Who wants a KO for Christmas?" Seriously brother?
  • Daley gets on the mic and when asked who he wanted to fight, he actually gotdamn answers. That is my biggest pet peeve. If they ask you who you want to fight, you ANSWER. BTW, he called out KJ Noons and then Nick Diaz
  • They brought Rashad Evans into the cage. I guess he defected to Strikeforce? I'd love to see him fight King Mo. Oh wait, that's Tyron Woodley. My bad.
  • Babalu is a creepy-looking dude. I don't mean Mauro creepy, I mean the Undertaker creepy. I was quite upset that Hendo didn't come out to Lunatic Fringe. Quite upset. Like when Fedor stopped coming out to Enae Volare Mezzo. I'll never forgive you for that Fedor.
  • Gotdamn. Hendo killed him with BRUTAL ground and pound. Sobral was HURT.
  • Wow, what a fucking show. I thoroughly, THOROUGHLY enjoyed this show. So much that I watched it twice, This was the steak and mashed potatoes and you bet your ass I went back for seconds.

I’m over entrances and introductions. Skip them every time, even if sometimes I scroll 20 seconds into the round. For the live crowd maybe they care but give me fights, and nothing else. I couldn’t care less about a backstage interview or the latest thing they’re hyping up. Goes for both Strikeforce and the UFC.

I had to do a double take when the ref stopped (IIRC) OSP from doing elbows on the ground. Such a stupid rule, and pointless.

I thought the commentary was much improved until Mauro got properly warmed up. Frank kept his face shut for most of the time and generally was okay when he didn’t, for a change. I really like Pat Miletich’s commentary though, just wish they’d find him some better partners. I still maintain the best SF commentary I’ve heard was Pat solo-casting some prelims that got streamed on Sherdog a while back.

Daley completely clowned Scott Smith. Smith had nothing for him. The knockout was a thing of beauty, pushing Scott and then luring him in for the kill. Fabulous stuff. I’m over the Koscheck suckerpunch too. Mainly because it was a) just such a stupid thing and b) nobody was hurt. Palhares and Falcao are were perpetrators in recent memory in my opinion than Daley.

The OSP fight should have indeed been stopped in the first. I had the fight 30-25 like d’Amato. Radach was defending himself but that’s ALL he was doing. Putting on ‘headphones’, kissing the mat and relying on the back-of-the-head rule is quitting, to me. If you do it for a few seconds, fine. Doing it for ten minutes? Get that man out of there. OSP is a beast though, could be a star indeed.

Mike Kyle did an absolute hatchet job on Silva in the opening part of the first round but Silva’s massive dome just took it and asked for seconds. Funny fight to watch, since Silva isn’t really taller than Kyle, just more… humongous.

I give Kyle props for getting one of MMA’s most underutilized fouls some play. Gotta love headbutts to the chest. At least he didn’t bite this time.

Bigfoot Silva has never impressed me

I read some guys on BE claiming he’d “destroy” Lesnar, and i just thought that was laughable. People need to stop acting like overrating non-UFC fighters makes them smarter fans.

That being said, Semtex is legit. The UFC gives away Paul Daley and takes Jake Shields. I’d say Strikeforce won that exchange.

Mauro is a clown. That “H-Bomb” thing was ridiculous, and you could tell by the way Shamrock and Miletich reacted to it that they thought so too. I’m guessing the reason for Mauro’s over-the-top hype is that Strikeforce really wants to ride Henderson in that 205-pound division. A questionable strategy if you ask me.

um….their 205 division is basically 4 guys at this point. why not ride the “name” as far as it takes you? if he fights feijao, mousasi and king mo in 2011, who among us wouldnt be stoked?

my mother was right....no one cares what i have to say

I suppose you're right

I would definitely want to watch all those fights.

I just meant that I don’t think Henderson can draw the casual fans. If I’m not mistaken the UFC events he headlined didn’t sell very well. And even Strikeforce’s fans voted for Mike Kyle over Henderson in that light heavyweight title shot poll.

Yes, SF won the Daley-Shields exchange

except that Shields just happens to be the better fighter.

Forget it Donny. You're out of your element.

That Ric Flair gif was the funniest thing I’ve seen all week. Nobody sells a good ass-kicking like The Nature Boy.

I’ll never understand why so many people like Mauro.
