A Quick Look at the TUF Season Finale and Strikeforce: Saint Louis Ratings

The ratings for both shows were recently released. Here are the pertinent details from Sergio Non.

An average of 2 million people watched The Ultimate Fighter Season 12 Finale this past weekend, while 341,000 saw the overlapping Strikeforce broadcast on Showtime, Spike TV said Tuesday.

As part of many basic packages offered by cable and satellite TV providers, Spike is available in more than 98 million homes. Showtime, a premium channel that costs an additional fee, has about 18 million subscribers.

TUF's show peaked at 2.3 million viewers between 10:15 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., when Nam Phan and Leonard Garcia went three rounds in bout packed with enough action to win Fight of the Night for the broadcast. Garcia was awarded a heavily disputed split decision.

Strikeforce peaked at 465,000 viewers in its final quarter-hour, according to MMAjunkie.com. Dan Henderson knocked out Renato "Babalu" Sobral in the main event.

Now, normally a show will slowly build towards the main event which you can see it clearly did for the Strikeforce show. However, that is not the case for the UFC show. It peaked at the first fight. The finale for a 14 weeks long show peaked before the actual final match aired.

Now, some might say 'Well, the show ended after midnight, it was late, people wanted to leave", well the ratings for past UFC events don't bear that out. Neither do the ratings for the Strikeforce show. Oddly enough, the 450K Strikeforce main event viewers didn't click over to the TUF Finale to watch once Strikeforce was over. That's interesting.

While Strikeforce's ratings weren't their best, it was the first Showtime event with a live counter from the UFC. In that respects, the numbers are quite good.

So what caused people to stop tuning in to the TUF show? You tell me.

Bonnar versus Opponent?

Finals featuring awkward wrestle-puncher and wrestle-choker?

That’s my take, but I don’t remember the time line of which aired when.

Personally, I tuned-in because I like Brookins personality and wanted to see if he’d pull it out despite his considerable weaknesses.

But they started turning off the show after the Garcia fight

Ahh, gotcha

So maybe the decision killed the momentum form the fight? I mean, people were roaring bullshit in the arena louder than I believe I’ve ever heard. To me it was more of a “oh well” moment, but I wonder if for the casual it was a turd in the pool?

?

Why would a commentator commentating kill ratings? Do that many people dislike him?

People dig it when Rogan flips out

The broken decision, I could see people turning it off after that.

Sport is broken?

He said the judges are flawed when a fight isn’t won by a competitor is inconsistent. This isn’t figure skating to the casual fan and I don’t think they care about decisions as much actual finishes.

But for an exciting fight like that, to have such a small crowd reacting that strongly to the decision, I think it was a turn-off. That would make me walk away before a rant from a rant-heavy commentator would. I never turned-off SF or Elite when Mauro, Gus or even f**king Goldberg were running their mouths, but I’m not a casual fan either.

Perhaps your perception is so hardcore and media-aware that you might see it differently than the majority of the audience?

Casual listener doesn't discern

and wouldn’t want to watch a show where the crowd is chanting bullshit and the “commentator” is railing on about how bad the judging is.

seconded

The first fight was more entertaining than the second for casual fans (gassed striking vs technical wrestling), that was a momentum killer, I suspect. The show also reinforced two of my negative assumptions about MMA fights – light guys don’t usually knock people out, and wrestlers don’t usually put on exciting matches.

it's obvious. people want knockouts or people who are trying to go for ko's. (leonard garcia)

i can see dana sending out a memo saying you better be going for the submission fast and get it or you better be trying to knock people out or we will cut your azz.

It’s not that simple. People like slick submissions just as much as they like knockouts. However, based on posts around the net, they don’t like seeing 15 minutes of submission attempts – if the submission isn’t there, or the takedown isn’t there, they want the fighters to try something else, not battle for position and points.

a fast sub is exciting but i'll use the hendricks/story fight as an example where the ref should.....

have broken them up and had them standing face to face. i even had rick story at a +175 and i was very disappointed in that fight. too much positioning in that fight and not enough punches. the bonnar fight had more action but we did not see the blood fest we are used to with bonnar. i admit i want striking fights. plus i had pham at +145 and thought he did win but garcia is extremely entertaining to watch and he will always have another fight as long as he can stand and bang. even though more than half his punches don’t connect.

I agree with what you said about the second fight. Neither fighter was doing anything wrong, but the ref should have separated them for the sake of the audience – they were essentially stalled.

Dont forget the timezones!

You mention 10:15 to 10:30…well for us west coasters, it was 7-10 for TUF Finale. So we got to watch the first hour, than the Strikeforce event came on, and many people had to switch over, or back and for between them. I also think if you put on a Strikeforce Challengers event up against a UFC PPV, UFC wins every time. So isnt that what we have here? Strikeforce events on Showtime is the closest they have to PPV, and TUF finale this time was about on par with a good SF:Challengers fight (ex. SFChallengers July2010 – Female belt on the line, and slam heard round the world, Mike Kyle/Albongo, etc). This finale was filled with good solid fights, but really a bunch of fluff the UFC typically relegates to the non broadcast part of PPV. Even the main event would likely have been very early on a PPV, or even untelevised. No question that Strikeforce had the more exciting event this time, lucky for them. If this event had finished with a bunch of decisions we would be writing very different articles today. We would be focusing on how Hendo/Babalu/Smith/Daley etc lack the KO power they once had, how thier ‘natural born killer’ instincts are gone…Even if 3 of the TUF finale fights ended in spectacular KO’s, who cares? If I read that Nam phan was KO’d by Garcia, Bonnar KO’d, than read that Babalu, Smith, Lindland were all KO, its easy still to know that Strikeforce was the better event…. So lets keep ourselves that comparing Challenger/TUF Finale to UFC PPV/Strikeforce on Showtime isnt a fair comparison under any condition…and that with few exceptions (Fedor/Werdum) that Strikeforce isnt putting on top level events in comparison to the average UFC PPV. I bet most of us could easily pick six absolutly fabulous UFC events this year, can anyone name 3 from Strikeforce?
