The 'Ice Spill' and Viral Marketing

For those of us that watched UFC 109's preliminary card on Spike we witnessed some unintentional comedy thanks to an ice spill.

The incident became instant fodder for anyone with a keyboard and several videos appeared on youtube. Some organizations would respond to this mishap by trying to hide it. But the 'Ice Spill' has the potential to be a viral hit (primarily due to Rogan's commentary). The UFC did something smart, and posted their own version online but this one had a commercial for UFC 110 as the lead in.

This is a great example of utilizing the web and, dare I say, blogs, to advertise for Zuffa's upcoming event.

As of this moment the video has surpassed 20,000 views. Compare that to the 10,000 views that the UFC 110 preview video on the UFC's channel.

Now if only they would learn from Bellator and post some highlight vids.

Better late than never.

Props to the UFC for finally figuring out this newfangled YouTube thing.

It’s unbelievable that the UFC hasn’t done this sooner. They’ve started posting their Countdown shows online, which is a good start, but they do need to go Bellator-style.

Nobody would know much about Bellator if they didn’t post those videos. That was ingenious on their part. If the UFC puts their own stuff out there, it’s only going to help things.

At some point, the UFC just HAS to figure out how to use the internet for promoting. Their fans are the internet generation; they hurt only themselves but not having a pervasive, generous, exciting web presence.
