Breaking: Vitor Belfort off of UFC 112
Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports tweets this breaking news:
Vitor Belfort is injured (shoulder) and off UFC 112 title fight with Anderson Silva. Confirmed by Dana White More details to come.
The news was first reported by Tatame. Belfort was scheduled to fight Anderson Silva for the UFC middleweight title at UFC 112, which is the UFC's debut event in Abu Dhabi. The emirate also recently bought a 10% share of Zuffa.
With Belfort off the card all eyes turn to Chael Sonnen who recently defeated Nate Marquardt in a number one contender bout. However Sonnen suffered a nasty cut and is medically suspended until March 9th. Could he be ready to go by April 10th?
Is there anyone else the UFC could realistically stick in to fight Anderson? Nate Marquardt was just dominated and Demian Maia is medically suspended until August 6th. Too bad Zuffa can't call Dan Henderson.
Update: Josh Gross adds some more information:

That’s what he had, shit!! well, unless they should just give Silva a fight at 205.

well this sucks.
they say anderson is still on the card, going to be interesting who they pick to replace with maia and sonnan on the injured list.
hopefully its not another shitty fight at 205 with someone with zero chance at winning.

.
who will the UFC bring in if both Mia and Sonned are not able to fight. Will they postone anderson fighting anyone, or will they have Anderson fight someone in the LIght heavy wight division? Ala Randy Couture or someone who will be available ,Thiago Silva ? Can anyone think of someone else who will be ready to go in time?
Randy and Rich Franklin is being worked for June unless they change it

Id like to see Franklin and silva go at it in the 205 wight class ,maybe it might make a differnce if franklin doesn have to cut that much weight, although i see Silva still winning it might be much closer this time.
Sorry Franklin doesn’t really care for another fight against Silva. There will be no difference in the outcome.
yeah yeah yeah . . .

not out of the question...
but nate could step in. just think back a few years when bj and gsp fought for the #1 contender for hughes welterweight title. gsp got the decision win, however got hurt in training and bj stepped in and fought hughes.

but Hughes-Penn 2 was more intriguing and plus GSP-Penn I was close

true but i dont think that matters really.
nate is still a more gifted fighter than sonnan as poses a threat to anderson other than sonnans only chance of mauling him for 5 rounds.

one more possibility..
i bet matt hughes has been in danas ear saying he would love a shot at the middleweight title
i wouldn’t put it past them to make it.

Shit
Anyone but Chael or Nate would be weak @185. Tito? Just for shits and giggles? Ok, how about karma?
Dammit
I was really, really looking forward to this.
And was that snide little hendo quip really necessary? Seems pretty lame to me.
well sonnen gets what he wants.
can he deliver on a +450 moneyline imo.

Dream Scenario
It will never happen:
Anderson Silva takes on Thiago Silva and wins in decisive fashion.
Rua beats Machida.
Andereson Silva vaults over the Rampage/Evans winner and gets a title shot at Rua.
Middleweight title gets vacated.
GSP beats the holy hell out of Hardy.
GSP takes on Sonnen for the vacant Middleweight belt.
How much trash do you think Sonnen could talk about a French-Canadian?
Welterweight title gets vacated.
Fitch beats Alves and Koscheck beats Daley, both decisively.
Dana White tells Fitch and Koscheck, either you fight each other for the vacant title or I find two other guys and you keep waiting.
BJ Penn mangles Edgar, then moves on to fight a top ten welterweight.
Lightweight title gets vacated.
Kenny Florian wins his fight with Gono and takes on Maynard for the Lightweight title.

Alan Belcher
After all, does the UFC have another contender that will compete?
- Sonnen and Maia is out.
- Maia is out.
- Marquardt can possibly compete for the title, but fans will focus on his very recent loss. It is still a great match. It’s not like he was really hurt or cut.
- Okami? nah, not really
Well whoever decides to compete against the MW champion on short notice should get some amount of respect and hopefully the UFC will remember the favor. An opportunity of a lifetime awaits a contender.
OR Joe Silva and Dana White gets creative and arranges another fight at 205lbs. But last time I checked, very few 205 fighters will face Anderson Silva on short notice.
yeah yeah yeah . . .
