Anderson Silva to fight Demian Maia--What?

Yeah! Have the guy with a split eyelid fight one of the best strikers of our time....

The UFC announced that Demian Maia (12-1) will step in for the injured Vitor Belfort to fight Anderson Silva at UFC 112.

Maia defeated Dan Miller at UFC 109 but was suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission until August 6th with an eyelid laceration. I guess this means that Maia had the cut cleared by an ophthalmologist or an ocular-plastics doctor. Or the UFC decided to ignore, not give two s****, sidestep the athletic commission systems.

maia by submission.

How thrilled can a guy be has to take a back seat to the guy taking a back seat

to the guy taking a back seat for the title shot.

Nate after his loss to Sonnen is by my calculations 12-16 fights away from a title shot.

haha 12 to 16.

If Maia was physically larger and stronger, Silva would have a hard road. As it is, Maia will have a very hard time muscling Silva into an advantageous position. He’s certainly a higher level BJJ black belt than Silva. But, Silva is better all around and as long as the fight in on the feet, it’s Silva’s game. Plus, Silva has shown a great improvement in his takedown defense, which was most evident in the Leites fight.

I like Silva by KO but it could also resemble the Leites fight where Silva takes a decision.

maia’s take downs are worlds ahead of leites. i saw leities live try for 3 rounds to take a boxer down and failed 95% of the time. when he had him down he couldn’t keep him down. you can see his takedown attempts coming a mile away.

maia has judo as well. he took down sonnan, a great wrestler, with ease.

Fuck this....

Putting Marquardt in, even after a loss, makes INFINITELY more sense….

You’re telling me they’ll put Griffin in there against Silva after a loss but not Nate? And instead put the guy he KTFO in instead?!!!

Oh yeah, makes a shit ton of sense… not ANOTHER gimme fight at all.

Fucking weak.

Don’t get all pissy with me just because you jerk it to the Maia poster hanging over your bed.

Put something with intellectual capital in the discussion next time instead of a half-ass’d insult. Makes you sound like an asshole.

LOL No, no I am definitely not...

But I’m a hell of a lot brighter than you are. I probably smell better too.

Please, stop getting pissy.

Nice.

That was a hell of a burn.

Tito Ortiz would be proud.

There's no mandatory minimum on his suspension.

If a doctor clears him, he’s good to go. As per Josh Gross.

And really, only the UFC can put on a fight between the #1 and #4 middleweights and get criticized for it…

by SpaceSoap on Feb 12, 2010 11:12 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

I seriously did not realize he was ranked #4. That’s being kinda generous towards the guy IMO. Top 10 for sure. But #4?

I only bitch because Silva’s P4P the best… Maia just seems like such a longshot.

Nevada State suspension only means he is suspended

IN NEVADA. Not the UAE. The UFC is the commission body in foriegn markets like the UK as well.

Looks like they cleared him. 100% legit.

by Wolfgangsta on Feb 12, 2010 11:35 PM EST reply actions

100% legit.

Not exactly. State athletic commissions are suppose to honor each other. The UFC international commission is suppose to be modeled after that system…

Yeah

And if he gets cleared by a doctor, all is well and honoured. If that never happens and they go through with it anyway, then yes, that is undoubtedly a real problem, but shouldn’t we wait until that actually happens before we start to criticize?

by SpaceSoap on Feb 13, 2010 12:31 AM EST up reply actions

I knocked this guy out

in 21 seconds and he gets a title fight?!?! WTF?!!

by Nate Marquardt on Feb 13, 2010 1:05 AM EST up reply actions

Well Nate

You know i’m a huge fan and all, but you’re coming off a lose while he’s coming off a win. That plus when the rankings are updated you’re sure to fall behind him. I know it’s tough to swallow for you, but i don’t see what the problem is.

by SpaceSoap on Feb 13, 2010 1:15 AM EST up reply actions

(unless Maia is still declared medically unfit come fight time – in which case yeah, you got hosed)

by SpaceSoap on Feb 13, 2010 1:20 AM EST up reply actions

Maia is ahead of the guy who just knocked him out after one win? Usually, in the past, it takes a couple wins or atleast one big win (bigger than Dan Miller) to catapult you past the guy who destroyed you.

by CaptLuNaTic on Feb 13, 2010 10:28 AM EST up reply actions

only in very recent title history

6-7 years ago you could get title shots right off loses.

Unless you’re couture then you’re fed them off losses on the regular.

by Wolfgangsta on Feb 13, 2010 2:44 PM EST up reply actions

Your right we should wait before rendering final judgment on teh efficacy of this move.

Yet, as of this moment, Maia is not medically cleared to fight. And even with a “doctors” clearance there will still be questions.

ya but they aren't legally bound to it

Nevada can huff and puff a little bit but the UFC calls the shots there more or less.

Besides, all they need to do is have a doctor clear him.

by Wolfgangsta on Feb 13, 2010 2:38 AM EST up reply actions

There needs to be some digging into this decision, I can’t for the life of me figure this out. Sonnen had more than enough time to be ready for the fight since his suspension is less than Maia’s was. Maia has no business being in the title picture after only beating Miller after getting KTFO by Nate The Great. Someone needs to get to Dana or Iole or whoever and get some answers this makes no sense and is something i’d expect from SF not the UFC.

by Raker on Feb 13, 2010 2:25 AM EST reply actions

Sonnen had more than enough time? did you see the axe wound on Sonnes head??? and if Sonnen doesnt want to take the biggest fight of his life on short notice than he shouldn’t have to,

maia has as much business being in the title picture as marqardt and sonnen, they all lost to each other and they all beat each other, Christ cry me a river about who has a right to a title shot, you give the shot to whoever can take it at the moment your able to give it

Sf gives a title shot against the greatest mma heavyweight of all time to a guy with 1 top 20 hw win in his career

Ufc goes from having the number 1 mw fighting against a top 10 mw to the number 1 mw fighting against a top 10 mw

yea they are similar

I agree this fight is crap. Silva will destroy him prob in the first round.

At least there is still one good title fight on the card

I was looking forward to seeing him fight Vitor

by Devastator on Feb 14, 2010 3:19 AM EST reply actions

If i remember correctly......

Not even one year ago people on every site were saying Maia, is the best choice to fight silva. And Now everybody is up n arms about it. Makes no sence to me. I still think silva is gonna win just n the second the first will go a lot like the Henderson fight IMO, with Maia on top the first round looking for a sub. Then getting knockout n the second.

by J smooth 420 on Feb 14, 2010 12:58 PM EST via mobile reply actions

I understand this point of view, but there is a an ebb and flow to MMA.

A year ago Maia was a submission machine. Today, he’s been KTFO by Nate Marquardt (who was competitive despite losing), with mediocre stand-up (Joe Rogan himself called it amateur kick boxing) and he has a cut on his eye lid that was suppose to warrant a suspension.

Also, don’t under estimate the excitement people were feeling towards a potential Sonnen-Silva fight. Immediately after UFC 109 all people were talking about was Sonnen vs. Silva no one even mentioned Vitor

will go a lot like the Henderson fight

Maia is not even close to being the wrestler that Hendo is. He wont be able to take down Silva and he will get KOd. I would much rather see someone fight him who can take him down like Sonnen or even Nate the great this fight with Maia will be boring.
And it would have been even better to see someone like Vitor who might have a chance standing with him.
