Bobby Lashley will take a pass on that Brett Rogers fight

photo by Esther Lin via Showtime on Flickr

Scott Coker certainly raised our eyebrows when he said that he wanted Bobby Lashley to fight Brett Rogers next.

The crew of Inside MMA showed Lashley a poll where 52% of the fans said they wanted Bobby to fight  Brett Rogers next. Lashley responded by asking for a rain check:

"I don't understand this. Brett Rogers isn't the champ. You've got Fedor who is considered the best pound-for-pound fighter and you've got Overeem who's the champ. If they want me to go up to that level let's go all the way up to that level and fight the champ."

...

"I want Overeem. Either let me fight the way I want to -- build up, get a few fights under my belt, work my way up -- or let me fight the champ. If it's fighting the champ I'll fight the champ."

Is anyone else a little confused with this logic? Lashley either wants some time to develop or fight the champion immediately. Those options seem to be diametrically opposed-- what gives?

Bobby may simply think Overeem is an easier opponent than Rogers plus a victory there puts Lashley in a position to fight Fedor, which will certainly be for the serious cash. Where as, fighting Brett is a high-risk (read as: Lashley will most likely be (T)KO'd) low reward fight that doesn't make much long-term sense for Lashley or Strikeforce.

OR maybe he is just throwing Overeem out there

because he knows he isnt going to be fighting here anytime soon. And maybe he also knows Rogers will knock him out.

I love Bobby, but his logic is flawed; Rogers would be the best test, period. I think Bobby is looking at the payday and doesn’t want to risk getting jobbed, because Rogers would work his shit over if he wasn’t on his A-game.

Sorry Bobby, you don’t call the shots on this one. You wanted to go the way Lesnar didn’t, by earning your stripes? You need to earn at least one more pal… the one that says ‘can beat non-cans too’.

The CANCRUSHER!!!!!! ASHLEY

just when he was about to get a decent guy to fight he says he doesn’t want to fight. I guess it’s back to crushing cans in the minor leagues again or go the UFC. Oh wait, he’s not that big of a draw, otherwise he probably could’ve.

Make no mistake about it, Lashley would be a huge draw. The casual fans love a freak show, and he would definately sell tickets. The question is, can he beat someone with some ability. He would stand a chance at being a two-and-outer if he didn’t… then it would be back to TNA rasslin’.
