Demian Maia cleared by NSAC doctor

Split eye-lid be damned!

When the UFC announced that Demian Maia would replace the injured Vitor Belfort WKR was a bit perplexed. After all, wasn't this the fighter who was suspended until August 6th unless cleared by an ophthalmologist or an ocular-plastics doctor?

But the fact that the UFC moved forward with Maia meant that they were confident he would be cleared and today Kevin Iole passes along word that Maia was cleared by a doctor:

"Demian Maia was examined by a Nevada Athletic Commission doctor this week and he was cleared to fight."

It's nice to know that the NSAC employs an ophthalmologist or an ocular-plastics doctor.

Maia will fight Anderson Silva at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi on April 10th.

I figured this would happen.

If they’re just gonna rush an unfit fighter, why not Sonnen?

There still needs to be some answers about this, i’m still befudled by why Sonnen isn’t fighting Silva nothing i’ve heard or read has been a concret answer to that question.

Well

Just from a visual perspective, Sonnen looked way more hurt than Maia. He’s definitely been more vocal about needing recovery time as well.

So there’s your answer probably. Maia was healthier than Sonnen.

Really don’t know why everyone got all up in arms and suspicious about this to begin with. It’s not like the UFC has a history of this kind of stuff.

From what I’ve seen the athletic commisions aren’t very flexible so it could be a situation where any cut to the eye is an automatic ban of a set number of months. When it comes to someone’s vision people are generally very cautions.

It could be after a week for the swelling and such to go down the cut to Maia isn’t so bad but Sonnen was just too cut up.
