Upset Alert! Jorge Masvidal Loses, Lombard Victorious

Photo

Bellator middleweight champion, Hector Lombard, won his second fight outside of Bellator since winning the title last year. Lombard defeated Joey Gorczynski by unanimous decision at G-Force Fights 3.

Sherdog described Lombard's performance as "lackluster" and that the crowd turned on him due to his poor performance.

Far more shocking was Jore Masvidal's split decision loss to Luis Palomino. Sherdog describes the action as fairly equal but Masvidal was furious with the decision saying,

"I didn’t know low kicks and running won the fight," said Masvidal in a post-fight interview. "Look at my face; I am just as pretty as when I went in."

Masvidal's loss represents one of the problems with co-promotion. A marquee fighter (many had Masvidal making the lightweight finals last year) dropping a fight to an unknown fighter not under contract can create some serious problems for a promotion as it damages the brand and drawing power of the fighter. Of course, Jorge might not have been taking the fight seriously.

Jordan Breen tweeted,

"Three weeks ago, Jorge Masvidal told me he had a tune-up fight. 'Against who?' I asked. 'Shit, I dunno. Some guy. Don't matter,' he said."

Bet he is regretting that decision...

What does any of this have to do with co-promotion? Bellator wasn’t co promoting this card.

the let their fighters fight in other promotions, while not “co-promotion” in the sense of Dream-Strikeforce it represents an open door policy akin to co-promotion in that there are similar risks

I get what you mean, but Bellator didn’t really have a choice in this case. It’s been so long since their last show it wouldn’t have been fair to let these guys just sit on the shelf for so long.

Masvidal has no one to blame but himself. I did not see the fight but he’s too talented of a guy to lose to Palomino(who also fought in Bellator). This seems like a case where he was disinterested because he can’t wait to avenge his loss to Imada and took a fight here assuming he’d go out and win.

I know that they kind of had to do an open door policy and with it being season oriented it will reinforce that open door system. It just takes the wind out of one of your fighters without building up another
